Why a Balbianello Proposal Needs a Plan Before the Question
A Villa Balbianello proposal works best when you treat it as a small production: a booked entry time, a chosen spot in the garden and a photographer already in place before you arrive. You can propose during a normal visit, but the villa is managed by FAI, entry is by advance booking only, and on busy days the terraces fill with visitors, so the plan has to be made before the question.
Balbianello sits at the tip of the Lavedo promontory near Lenno, on the western shore of Lake Como. The garden is built in terraces that climb from the boat landing to a three arched loggia at the highest point, with water on three sides. That shape is what makes it so photogenic, and also what makes it tricky: there are only a few places where you can stand with a clear view and some distance from other people.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak have photographed weddings and elopements at Balbianello, and they plan proposals here around the garden as it really works on a visiting day. This guide covers where to ask, when to go, how your photographer stays out of sight, and the short session after the yes.
If you are still choosing between villas and viewpoints around the lake, start with our broader guide to planning a proposal at Lake Como, then come back here once Balbianello is your choice.
Choosing the Spot: Loggia, Lawn or Arriving by Boat
The loggia. The loggia at the top of the promontory is the moment most people picture: open arches, the lake on both sides, Bellagio and the mountains in the distance. It is also the most visited point of the garden, so it suits a proposal only when you have it nearly to yourselves. That means the first minutes after opening or a private visit. On a regular afternoon, expect other visitors walking through your frame.
The lawns and terraces. Below the loggia, paths wind through lawns edged with boxwood and laurel, with plane trees pruned into candelabra shapes. These lower terraces give you more room and more angles. A photographer can stand further back with a longer lens and still see your faces, and the lake fills the background without the crowd that gathers at the top. For a proposal that feels calm rather than staged, this is often the better choice.
Arriving by boat. FAI lists two ways to reach the villa: a paid taxi boat from Lido di Lenno, run by a private operator and available by reservation, or a walk from Lenno of about 1 km uphill, partly on gravel, taking around 25 minutes. The boat is part of the story. The approach to the landing, with the villa rising above the water, is one of the most recognisable views on the lake, and your photographer can cover it from the shore or from the landing while you are still just two visitors on a boat ride.
Our advice is to choose the spot by the light and the people, not only by the view. In the morning, the loggia and the upper terraces are calmer; later in the day the garden is busier and the light shifts across the promontory. We walk the garden with you in mind before the day, so the photographer knows exactly where you will stop.
Timing It: First Entry, Private Visits and Winter Closures
First entry. FAI lists the villa as open from March to January, every day except Monday and Wednesday, from 10:00 to 18:00, with shorter hours of 10:00 to 17:00 from November. Booking is required, and tickets for the park only or for the villa and park are sold through the FAI ticket site. If you want the garden at its quietest, book the first entry of the day and head straight to your spot. You have a short window before the paths fill.
Private visits. FAI also offers private and group visits, which must be requested in advance by email to the villa's booking office. FAI notes that prices may vary for special events, so ask for a quote with your date, the number of people and the fact that you plan a proposal with a photographer. This is the option to choose if the loggia without other visitors matters more than anything else. Wedding slots and rental fees are a separate subject with their own price list.
Winter closures. Outside the main season the villa opens only on selected days. For the 2026 season FAI listed only a handful of weekend dates in February and a few dates in early January 2027, so a winter proposal needs careful checking of the calendar first. If your trip falls on a closed day, the lake still offers strong alternatives: a private boat that passes beneath the promontory, the lakeside in Lenno, or another villa altogether. Villa Balbiano in Ossuccio, often confused with Balbianello because of the similar name, is a separate private villa worth asking about if the dates do not line up.
Season and light. From May to September, a 10:00 entry gives soft side light on the loggia before the midday sun gets hard. In autumn the light is lower and warmer through the whole visit, and the garden is often calmer. Either works; what matters is that you book the slot first and build the plan around it.
Keeping the Photographer Hidden, and the Session After the Yes
How the photographer blends in. We arrive before you, with a compact kit, and move through the garden like any other visitor. We agree in advance on the exact place where you will stop and the signal that tells us you are about to ask: a hand on the shoulder, taking off sunglasses, turning to the lake. Until that moment we stay at a distance with a longer lens, so your partner has no reason to look twice.
The ring handoff. The ring is the detail people forget. If you arrive by taxi boat with a small bag, you carry it yourself. If you are worried about a pocket bulge on the walk up, we can hold the ring and pass it to you at an agreed point, out of your partner's view. We plan this on a short call before the day so nothing is improvised in the garden.
Photo rules. Balbianello is a protected FAI property, and rules for professional photography and drones are set by FAI. Confirm the current conditions for a professional shoot with the villa when you book, especially if you want a private visit. We handle that conversation for you as part of the planning.
The session after the yes. Once the question is asked, we stay with you for a relaxed portrait session: first in the garden while the moment is fresh, then on the boat back, along the lakeside in Lenno or on a private boat on the water. Stuart and Yi Jia's proposal on Lake Como shows how a proposal can flow into a longer session, and Chelsea and Phil's elopement at Villa del Balbianello shows the garden in our photographs. For budgets and what a full proposal day can include, see our guide to Lake Como proposal cost.
Proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR, and we photograph a limited number of proposals and weddings each year so every plan gets our full attention. Tell us your travel dates and whether you prefer the first entry or a private visit, and check your date with us. We will reply with a plan for the spot, the timing and the photographer's position.
Frequently Asked Questions About Proposing at Villa del Balbianello
Can you propose at Villa del Balbianello?
Yes. You can propose during a normal booked visit, and FAI also offers private visits by email request. A normal visit means other visitors in the garden, so the first entry of the day or a private visit gives you the most quiet.
Do we need permission to take proposal photos at Balbianello?
Rules for professional photography and drones are set by FAI, and conditions can differ between a normal visit and a private one. Confirm them with the villa when you book. We take care of that step as part of planning.
Is Villa del Balbianello open in winter?
Only on selected days. FAI lists the season as March to January, with reduced hours from November and only a few open dates in January and February. Check the FAI calendar before you plan a winter trip.
How do you get to Villa del Balbianello?
By a paid taxi boat from Lido di Lenno, booked in advance with a private operator, or on foot from Lenno along a path of about 1 km that takes around 25 minutes. FAI also lists a longer 2.5 km trekking route of about 45 minutes.
How does a photographer stay hidden during the proposal?
We arrive first, dress like visitors, carry a small kit and work from a distance with a longer lens. A signal agreed in advance tells us when to move closer.
Can we come back to Balbianello for our wedding?
Yes, the villa hosts ceremonies and weddings. Our Villa del Balbianello wedding photographer guide explains how the day works there, and weddings with us start from 7,000 EUR.
