Villa Monastero Photoshoot: Engagement and Proposal Photos

Why Villa Monastero Works for Engagement and Proposal Photos

A Villa Monastero photoshoot is a private session you book directly with the villa in Varenna: you reserve a time slot by email, pay an hourly fee, and the shore garden is booked so that normally only your shoot takes place there during that slot. It is one of the most requested places at Lake Como for engagement photos and proposals, and the villa reports the numbers to match: according to Il Giorno, Villa Monastero hosted 378 photo shoots and 219 marriage proposals in 2025.

Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak have photographed engagement sessions in this garden, including Andrea and Jonah's session in Varenna, and the logistics there are different from most villas on the lake. The garden belongs to the Province of Lecco, runs for almost 2 km along the shore according to the villa, and stays open to the public while you shoot. Knowing how the booking system, the boat dock and the opening hours fit together is what turns a crowded garden into calm, unhurried photographs.

This article covers how to book a slot and what it costs, why the one shoot per slot rule matters, how to arrive by taxi boat, what the villa requires for drones, and which corners of the garden and which hours give the best light. If you are still choosing between places, our guide to the best engagement session locations at Lake Como compares Varenna with the other shores.

Booking a Slot: Hourly Fees and One Shoot at a Time

Booking works by email, not through a ticket desk on the day. The villa's official FAQ on private photo shoots says you first read the information and rates on its website, then write to villa.monastero@provincia.lecco.it with your preferred date and time slot. The request depends on availability, and the booking is only confirmed once payment has been made.

The minimum length is one hour, and you can book two hours or more; the duration has to be stated on the booking form. The FAQ lists a 2025 rate of 300 EUR for each hour of photo service, so two hours cost 600 EUR, and part of an hour is charged as a full hour. That fee includes entry for two people and the photographers. Anyone else who joins, a parent or a friend hiding behind a hedge for a proposal, buys a normal garden ticket, listed at 13 EUR full price for 2026. The villa had not published a 2026 photo rate when we checked, so treat 300 EUR per hour as the latest confirmed figure and ask for the current one when you write.

The rule that makes Villa Monastero special is about the slot itself. The FAQ says that, normally, two shoots do not run at the same time: bookings exist so that each shoot is the only one in the whole garden during the chosen time slot. Compare that with Villa Melzi in Bellagio, where the gardens' own photography page lists a fee of 427 EUR including VAT for a ticket valid all day, but states that exclusive areas cannot be reserved. At Melzi you may share the best bench with another couple and their photographer; at Monastero, the other people in the garden are visitors, not competing shoots.

Two details are easy to miss. The villa does not supply photographers or recommend names, so you bring your own. And private shoots may be shared on your personal social media, while shoots for brands, magazines or influencers count as commercial and follow different terms.

For budgeting, a typical session here combines the villa's hourly fee with the photographer's fee: one to two hours of villa time, so 300 to 600 EUR at the 2025 rate, on top of the session itself. Our Lake Como engagement session guide explains how the rest of the day can be planned around it.

Arriving by Taxi Boat, Opening Hours and Drone Rules

Arriving by taxi boat. Villa Monastero has its own landing for small boats such as taxi boats, and for a shoot or a proposal it costs nothing extra. You request it when you book. The FAQ is clear on one limit: the boat can drop you off or pick you up at the end, but it cannot wait at the dock during the shoot. That makes a boat arrival from Bellagio or Menaggio a natural opening for a proposal story, with the first photographs taken on the water, as long as your driver knows to come back at an agreed time.

Opening hours set the light. Shoots take place during garden opening hours. For 2026 the villa lists 9:30 am to 7:30 pm in April, May and September, 9:30 am to 8 pm in June, July and August, and 10 am to 6 pm in October, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. From November the garden closes at 5 pm and shuts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In June, when sunset in the Como area comes after 9 pm, the garden closes more than an hour before the sun goes down. The FAQ allows shoots outside opening hours on request at a higher rate, which is worth asking about if a sunset proposal matters to you.

Sharing the garden. During opening hours the garden is not exclusive to you. Other visitors, tour groups and conference guests may be present, the villa asks for a moderate tone of voice because it is a museum, and the privacy of other people must be respected. In practice this means arriving early in the slot and working with the quieter terraces first. The villa's 2026 page also notes that the garden is currently open only as far as the citrus grove, so confirm which sections are accessible when you book.

Drones. Drones are allowed, but only with authorisation from the Province of Lecco. The pilot sends the Province a signed self declaration confirming compliance with the European regulation and ENAC rules, registration as an operator on the d-flight portal, insurance that meets ENAC requirements and respect for other people's privacy. For drones of 250 grams or more, the pilot must also hold the appropriate licence. Villa Melzi, by contrast, does not allow drones at all.

Changing outfits. A room for changing before and after the shoot may be available for a fee. Ask at the time of booking, since availability is not guaranteed.

The Best Garden Corners and Light, With Andrea and Jonah's Session

Varenna sits on the eastern shore and faces west across the lake, so the shore garden takes the softer afternoon light, with Bellagio and the mountains of the opposite shore behind you. The villa building stands roughly in the middle of the garden. Mediterranean cypresses line the drive, and the terraces step down towards the water with balustrades, statues, small temples and citrus trees. We usually start close to the villa, where the architecture frames you, then move along the shore to where the lake opens up and the frame becomes water and sky.

For an engagement session, two hours lets you move through the garden without rushing and change once. For a proposal, one hour inside the villa is often enough: the question, the first reaction, then twenty to thirty minutes of portraits while the emotion is still there. Our guide to planning a proposal at Lake Como covers the hiding, signals and timing in more detail.

The best hours follow the closing times. From April to September, a slot in the last two hours before closing gives you lower, warmer sun on the terraces and fewer visitors than midday. After the villa, the session can continue in the village itself, with the colourful houses and the lakeside walkway a few minutes away on foot; our post on the best photo spots in Varenna shows where to go next. To see how the garden looks in a finished gallery, browse Andrea and Jonah's Villa Monastero engagement session.

We photograph a limited number of sessions and weddings each year, as a team of two, and we handle the villa booking timeline with you so the slot, the boat and the light line up. Engagement and proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR, and weddings from 7,000 EUR. Tell us your dates and whether it is a proposal or an engagement session, and check your date with us; we will suggest the hour and the route through the garden that suit your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Monastero Photoshoots

How much does a photoshoot at Villa Monastero cost?

The villa's official FAQ lists 300 EUR per hour for 2025, with a minimum of one hour, covering entry for two people and the photographers. Your photographer's fee comes on top; our engagement and proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR. Ask the villa for the current rate, since a 2026 photo rate had not been published when we checked.

Can I propose at Villa Monastero?

Yes, and many people do: Il Giorno reported 219 marriage proposals at the villa in 2025. Book a photo slot so the garden is not shared with another shoot, and mention a taxi boat arrival when you book if you plan to come by water.

Do we need to book the photo slot in advance?

Yes. Bookings are made by email to the villa with your date and time slot, depend on availability and are confirmed only after payment. For spring and summer weekends, we suggest writing as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

Can we fly a drone at Villa Monastero?

Only with authorisation from the Province of Lecco. The pilot must submit a signed declaration covering EU and ENAC rules, d-flight registration and insurance, and hold a licence for drones of 250 grams or more.

What time of day is best for photos in the Villa Monastero gardens?

The last two hours before closing, when the sun is lower and the terraces are quieter. In summer the garden closes at 8 pm, before sunset, so ask the villa about a slot outside opening hours if you want sunset light inside the garden.

Can we combine Villa Monastero with the Varenna lakefront in one session?

Yes. The villa is in the village, so a session can begin in the garden and continue on foot along the lakefront and through the old streets of Varenna, finishing with the evening light on the water.
