Marketplace Packages Versus a Planned Proposal: The Short Answer
A Lake Como proposal package from a marketplace starts at 425 USD on Flytographer and covers a 30 minute shoot, while the villa, the boat and the flowers are yours to arrange. Built as a full Lake Como proposal package with a hidden photographer, a private boat and, if you want one, an hour in a villa garden, the total comes to roughly 2,300 to 3,300 EUR with our photography, before flowers or a planner. The rules of the villa you choose decide what else you can add.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak are a two photographer team based at Lake Como who photograph proposals and engagement sessions as well as weddings. This guide prices a proposal line by line, from the hidden photographer to the villa slot, the boat, the flowers and the planner, then shows which garden rules shape the plan and what three sample budgets add up to.
The marketplace end is easy to read. Flytographer's proposal page lists its 30 minute package at 425 USD for 20 photos and its two hour package at 815 USD, and Airbnb lists short proposal shoots by individual Lake Como photographers. What these listings leave out is what makes a proposal work on this lake: a villa fee or permit, a hiding place agreed in advance, a plan for the boat, and someone who knows which gardens refuse flowers and music.
If you are still choosing the spot and the season, our guide to planning the proposal moment at Lake Como covers locations and timing, while this article stays with the numbers. Every figure below is quoted as the villa or the listing published it when we checked in October 2026.
Line by Line: Hidden Photographer, Villa Slot, Boat, Flowers and Planner
The hidden photographer. This is the line you cannot skip, and the one where prices spread furthest. Our engagement and proposal sessions start at 1,800 EUR, photographed on digital and analog film. As a two photographer team we can cover a moment that happens once from two angles: one frame wide enough to hold the villa and the water, one close enough to catch your partner's face.
The villa slot. Villa Monastero in Varenna prices a proposal by how much privacy you buy. An hour in the garden without exclusivity costs 300 EUR including VAT, with other visitors on the paths, while exclusive use of the Loggia by the lake or the neoclassical temple costs 1,000 EUR per hour. The Glorietta, a first floor terrace the villa offers for photo shoots and proposals, costs 1,300 EUR per hour and admits the two of you plus at most two staff, an allowance our two photographers fill.
Every Monastero slot must be booked at least 14 days ahead, and the advance for a shared garden hour is nonrefundable. The garden sees plenty of them: Il Giorno reported 219 marriage proposals at the villa in 2025, up from 79 in 2024.
Villa Melzi in Bellagio charges a flat 427 EUR including VAT for photography in its gardens, valid all day from 10 am to 7 pm, plus the 10 EUR garden ticket for each of you. For proposal sessions the villa advises the photographer to pay in advance, after which the ticket is collected at the office by name, so no payment has to happen in front of your partner. Nothing is refunded if you cancel.
The boat. One listing for a skippered boat from Vassena, near Bellagio, starts at 500 EUR for two hours for up to six people, fuel and insurance included. A taxi boat can land you at the Villa Monastero dock if you tell the villa when booking, but it cannot wait there during the shoot, so book the pickup as a second ride.
Flowers. We have not found a florist on the lake who publishes a proposal set up price, so this line arrives as a quote. It is also the line the villa rules cut first: Villa Monastero allows no decorations, floral arrangements or music, and Villa Melzi permits no decorations or set ups of any kind. In a public garden, plan on a bouquet in your hands at most, and confirm even that when you book.
The planner. The Knot's roundup of nine Lake Como proposal packages lists one proposal planning company from 1,000 USD for a signature package, though that company's own site now gives 3,300 USD as its minimum for full service, and another planner prices only on inquiry. A planner earns the fee when the plan needs a private villa, a set up where one is allowed, or a dinner afterwards; for a garden and a boat, we can plan the place, the hour and the hiding spot with you.
Villa Rules That Limit Set Ups, Flowers and Music
Public villa gardens on Lake Como accept proposals, but not productions. Villa Melzi spells it out: no area can be reserved for private use, and no decorations, musicians, officiants or drones are allowed, so a violinist or a ring of candles is off the table and your question is asked with visitors on the paths. The villa itself is not open to the public, so every frame is made outdoors.
Villa Monastero lets you buy privacy but not decoration. Decorations, floral arrangements and music are banned in the garden and on the Glorietta alike, and the steps down to the lake are off limits for safety. Paying 1,000 EUR for the temple buys an hour in a corner of a public garden without strangers in it, not permission to dress it.
Villa del Balbianello, run by FAI, treats photo services as a paid booking made in advance but publishes no rate and no proposal policy. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo requires a separate permit for professional photography on the property, so at both villas the fee arrives as a quote rather than a line you can price today.
A private villa works differently. Villa Balbiano in Ossuccio, on the west shore, is a late 16th century palazzo offered for exclusive stays, weddings, elopements and private photo sessions, so access, timing and anything you set up are agreed with the villa rather than fixed by a public garden's rulebook. Expect that freedom to be priced on request.
Timing changes the budget too. In late June the sun sets after 9:15 pm, well after the Villa Melzi photo ticket ends at 7 pm and the Villa Monastero garden closes at 8 pm, so a summer sunset proposal belongs on a boat or at a private villa. In September the Monastero garden closes at 7:30 pm and mid month sunset comes around 7:35 pm, so the low light falls almost inside opening hours.
Three worked budgets, each starting from our 1,800 EUR session, show the spread. A boat proposal with two hours on the 500 EUR private boat comes to about 2,300 EUR. Add one shared hour in the Villa Monastero garden and it reaches about 2,600 EUR, or about 3,300 EUR if that hour is exclusive in the temple, while a Bellagio version on the flat Villa Melzi fee lands in between. Flowers and a planner sit on top in every case.
Two Real Lake Como Proposals, and the Proposal as Chapter One
Our portfolio holds two full proposal galleries. In a real proposal at Villa Balbiano, the gallery takes in a wooden boat on the lake, the formal garden and the rooms inside the palazzo. Stuart and Yi Jia's Lake Como proposal pairs time on a boat with portraits on a villa lawn and along the lakefront.
Read them as chapter one of a longer story rather than a single frame. The question itself lasts seconds; the walk back to the boat, the ring in daylight and the first quiet portraits are what fill the gallery. Plan 30 to 60 minutes after the question, and if the ring matters to you as an object, read our notes on engagement ring photography at Lake Como before the day.
Engagement and proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR and weddings from 7,000 EUR, and we photograph a limited number of weddings each year. If you later marry here, the same two photographers already know you and the lake. Check your date with us, tell us where you are staying and in which month, and we will suggest the garden, the boat and the hour that fit that villa's rules.
If a session should follow the yes on another day of your trip, our Lake Como engagement session guide covers locations and seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Como Proposal Packages
How much does a photographed proposal at Lake Como cost?
Marketplace shoots start at 425 USD on Flytographer for 30 minutes. A planned proposal with our photography from 1,800 EUR and a private boat comes to about 2,300 EUR, and adding a villa garden hour brings it to roughly 2,600 to 3,300 EUR, before flowers or a planner.
How does the photographer stay hidden until the question?
By planning the spot rather than relying on luck. You agree a mark and a signal in advance from photos of the place, and the photographer arrives early and works from a distance. At Villa Melzi the photographer can settle the proposal fee before you arrive, and because no part of the garden can be reserved, one more person with a camera among the visitors goes unnoticed.
Can we propose inside Villa del Balbianello or Villa Melzi?
Villa Melzi itself is not open to the public, but its gardens accept proposal sessions for the 427 EUR photo fee, without decorations, set ups or a reserved area. Villa del Balbianello treats photography as a paid service booked in advance with FAI, which manages the villa, and publishes no rate, so ask FAI for terms before you plan around it.
Is a boat proposal on Lake Como a good idea?
Often, yes. A private boat is the one setting with no other visitors, it still works after the villa gardens close, and one listing we checked starts at 500 EUR for two hours with a skipper. The trade off is that nobody can hide on a small boat, so the usual cover is a photo tour booked as a gift, with the question once the session is under way.
What happens to the plan if it rains?
The villa fee is the exposed line. Villa Melzi can be paid on the day at the ticket office and gives no refund once paid, so with a spare day in your trip you can wait for a clear forecast. At Villa Monastero the exclusive Loggia, temple and Glorietta are prepaid, with cancellation penalties of 40 percent more than 60 days out, 70 percent from 31 to 60 days and the full amount within 30 days, so pick a backup spot with cover before you pay.
Can the proposal photographer also photograph our wedding later?
Yes, and it helps. Weddings start at 7,000 EUR, the proposal gallery becomes the first chapter of your wedding story, and by the wedding day you already know how we work.
