What Villa Monastero Allows: Symbolic Ceremonies While the Gardens Stay Open
A Villa Monastero wedding in Varenna is a symbolic ceremony, not a civil one: the villa rents its lakeside loggia, its neoclassical temple or the indoor Sala Polvani for a ceremony while the botanical garden stays open to visitors. The villa's own booking page lists a 2025 rate of 3,500 EUR including VAT for one exclusive hour of the chosen space, so you can budget the venue before you even write to it.
Konstantyn and Mariya have photographed couples in these gardens, including Andrea and Jonah's Villa Monastero engagement session, and couples planning a ceremony here tend to ask the same few questions. Is it legal? What does the fee cover? Can we have dinner there? Will tourists walk through our photos? This guide answers each one from the villa's published conditions.
Some context helps. Villa Monastero began as a Cistercian convent in the 12th century, became a private residence after the Mornico family bought it in 1569, and was given its eclectic look between 1897 and 1909. It has been public property since 1936 and today belongs to the Provincia di Lecco, which runs it as a house museum, a conference centre and a botanical garden that stretches almost 2 km along the shore. It is also one of the busiest sites on the lake: Il Giorno reported 396,782 tickets sold in 2025, along with 57 symbolic ceremonies, 20 private events and 219 marriage proposals.
That popularity is the key to planning here. You are booking a beautiful public space for a defined slot, not a private villa for the day. If you are still comparing that kind of arrangement with a full private hire, our Tremezzo wedding guide to Lake Como venues sets the western shore villas side by side.
Ceremony Spaces and Published Fees: Loggia, Temple and Sala Polvani
The villa offers three settings for a ceremony, each named on its booking page: the Loggia a lago, the open colonnade facing the water; the Tempietto neoclassico, the small classical temple in the garden; and the Sala Polvani, an indoor hall. The loggia puts the lake directly behind you, and the Sala Polvani is the natural choice if rain is forecast.
The published 2025 rates are clear. A symbolic ceremony in the selected space costs 3,500 EUR including VAT within opening hours. That buys exclusive use of the space for one hour, plus up to three further hours for set up, dismantling and photographs in the garden, which are not exclusive. Two exclusive hours cost 4,200 EUR. Using the villa before or after public opening hours adds a surcharge of 300 EUR per hour. The villa's online ceremony booking is set up for groups of up to 30 people; larger groups cannot yet book online and are handled by email.
These figures are 2025 rates and the villa may revise them. For 2026 ceremonies its weddings page asks couples to write to the villa by email, so treat the published numbers as a reference point and confirm the price for your year when you enquire. The same page also names the Giardino degli sposi and the Sala Fermi as ceremony settings, worth asking about if none of the three online options fits. As a typical range, a couple who takes the two hour slot and one early or late hour should expect roughly 4,200 to 4,500 EUR for the space alone, before flowers, music, a celebrant and any reception. That reasoning simply adds the published hourly surcharge to the two hour rate.
What the fee does not include matters as much. The villa states that it does not arrange floral arrangements, musical entertainment, a celebrant, SIAE music licensing or transport. You bring those through your planner. Our guide to how a symbolic ceremony works at Lake Como explains who leads it and how the vows are structured.
For photographs, the three hour allowance is generous. We use the exclusive hour for the ceremony itself, then spend the remaining time on family groups at the loggia and couple portraits along the garden paths. Note that the villa lists the lake stairs as off limits, so plan portraits on the terraces and paths rather than at the water's edge.
House Rules: Lead Time, Exclusive Caterer, Curfew and No Fireworks
The booking conditions are short and strict, and they shape the whole day.
Lead time. Ceremony reservations must reach the villa at least 20 days before the event. That is a minimum for paperwork, not a planning timeline. You register online, receive a contract and payment notice, sign and upload the contract, pay a deposit and then the balance. Only the person who requests the ceremony and receives the invoice can register, and that person pays the full amount. Cancelling within 60 days of the date costs 100% of the total; earlier than that, 50%.
No exclusive hire. The villa states plainly that it cannot be rented for exclusive use because it is open to visitors, and other events may take place on the same day. Your space is yours for the booked hour; the garden around it is not, so expect visitors on the paths, especially in summer.
Decor and drones. Flowers and decorations must not damage the building: no holes, hooks or glue, and nothing left behind. Drone footage needs authorisation from the Provincia di Lecco, with the pilot's registration, insurance and a signed declaration, so tell your videographer early.
Exclusive caterer. Catering at the villa is run under an exclusive contract by King Gestioni Alberghiere spa, and no food or drink may be brought in. The villa lists no preferred planners, photographers or videographers, so you are free to choose your own team for everything except food.
Reception and curfew. From April to October a reception can take place under a structure in the garden. The 2026 rates published with a ceremony booking are 300 EUR for set up and dismantling, 200 EUR per hour between 9am and 7pm, and 350 EUR per hour before 9am or after 7pm, with catering on top. Receptions must end by 11pm, and music is allowed only at low volume.
No fireworks. Fireworks are not allowed. If you want a dramatic finish, plan it at your dinner venue and check that venue's own rules.
One practical extra: the villa has a small boat dock, free of charge if you request it at booking. Arriving by private boat from your hotel is one of the nicest ways to start a Monastero ceremony, and it photographs far better than a walk through a crowd at the gate.
Pairing a Monastero Ceremony With Dinner at a Varenna Hotel
Because the garden reception is capped at 11pm with quiet music, many couples hold the ceremony at Villa Monastero and move to a Varenna hotel for dinner. The caterer's events contact uses an R Collection Hotels address, and R Collection runs three hotels in Varenna: Hotel Royal Victoria, Hotel Villa Cipressi and Casa Du Lac. Ask early whether a combined plan with one of them simplifies the menu, the timeline and the guest transfers.
Villa Cipressi is the obvious partner for a garden feel at dinner, with terraces that step down to the lake. You can see how it reads on camera in Britney and Jack's wedding at Villa Cipressi. For a fuller picture of the village, its lanes and where the light falls, read our Varenna wedding photographer guide.
If you want the marriage to be legally valid, plan the civil part separately. Varenna's town hall hosts small civil weddings in its Sala Civica (confirm dates and availability with the Comune di Varenna), and a common approach is to marry there a day or two before, then hold the symbolic ceremony at Monastero with all your guests. Our guide to a legal civil ceremony at a Lake Como town hall walks through the documents and timing for American couples.
For photography, a Monastero ceremony and a hotel dinner make a natural two location day. We start with getting ready at your hotel, take the boat or the short walk to the villa, cover the ceremony and portraits within your booked window, then follow the evening at dinner. Konstantyn and Mariya photograph a limited number of weddings each year, and weddings start from 7,000 EUR. If you would rather mark the moment with a smaller session in the gardens first, engagement and proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR. When you have a date in mind, check your date with us and tell us which space you are considering.
Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Monastero Weddings
Is a wedding at Villa Monastero legally binding?
No. The villa's booking page describes its ceremonies as symbolic and non civil. For a legal marriage, hold a civil ceremony at the town hall first, then your symbolic ceremony at the villa.
How much does a ceremony at Villa Monastero cost?
The published 2025 rate is 3,500 EUR including VAT for one exclusive hour of the loggia, temple or Sala Polvani, or 4,200 EUR for two hours, with 300 EUR per hour added outside opening hours. Confirm the current rate for your year with the villa.
How far in advance do we need to book Villa Monastero?
The formal minimum is 20 days before the event. In practice, secure the slot as soon as your date and hotel are fixed, since the villa hosts dozens of ceremonies a year and other events can share the day.
Can we hold the reception at Villa Monastero?
Yes, from April to October, under a garden structure with the villa's exclusive caterer. Receptions must end by 11pm, music must stay at low volume and no outside food or drink is allowed.
Will the gardens stay open to visitors during our ceremony?
Yes. The villa cannot be hired exclusively. Your ceremony space is reserved for your booked hour, but visitors continue to use the garden around it.
Can we have fireworks at a Villa Monastero wedding?
No. The villa's conditions do not allow fireworks.
