What Flying a US Photographer to Italy Really Adds
Destination wedding photographer travel fees for an Italy wedding usually land somewhere between 3,500 and 9,000 USD on top of the photography fee when a US photographer brings a second shooter to Lake Como. That range comes from four lines you pay for whether or not they appear on the invoice: two transatlantic flights, three to four hotel nights in peak season, airport transfers or a car, and the tax question on a cross border service.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak are a two photographer team based at Lake Como, so we see this decision from the other side every season. Couples often fall for a photographer at home, then discover the travel budget only once the quote arrives. This article does not tell you whom to hire. It gives you a worksheet so you can compare a flown in team and a team that already lives here on the same terms.
Think about time as well as money. The nonstop flight from New York to Milan Malpensa takes a little over eight hours, and from Malpensa the drive to the central lake takes about an hour or more, depending on which shore you are heading to. A careful photographer arrives at least a day early so jet lag does not sit on your wedding day, which means at least one extra hotel night that you are paying for.

A Landed Cost Worksheet in USD: Flights, Hotels, Car and Tax
Flights for two. Fare trackers put the typical New York to Milan round trip between about 645 and 1,130 USD, with a median near 875 USD, and June and July are the most expensive months on the route, with averages of about 1,050 USD. For a lead photographer and a second shooter flying in summer, plan on roughly 1,800 to 2,200 USD in economy from New York, before extra bags for camera equipment. Other US cities will price differently, so run your own route.
Hotel nights. Nightly rates around the lake swing widely with town, view and date. Como city is the cheaper base, while the lakefront hotels of Bellagio and Tremezzo in June, July and September cost several hundred dollars a night more. As a planning range, budget 300 to 700 USD per room per night. Four nights for two rooms comes to about 2,400 to 5,600 USD; one shared room halves that.
Car or transfers. Fixed fare transfer companies list a private standard sedan from Malpensa to Bellagio at roughly 190 to 260 EUR each way, and more for a van or a premium car, so the round trip runs roughly 400 to 550 EUR before waiting time. A rental car can cost less, but lakeside parking is scarce in summer and the narrow shore roads slow everything down on a wedding day.
Tax. Italy's standard VAT rate is 22 percent and applies to most services. How it applies to an invoice from a photographer based outside the EU, sold to a private couple, depends on place of supply rules, so ask your photographer and your accountant before you assume the quote is final. With an Italian supplier, simply ask whether the quote includes IVA.
Add the lines and the typical landed cost of flying a US team in is about 3,500 to 9,000 USD before any travel day rate. A team based at Lake Como carries none of the flight or hotel lines for a wedding here.
What Local Knowledge Saves on the Day: Boats, FAI Slots and Permits
Travel fees are only half the story. The other half is what local knowledge saves once the day begins, and much of it is logistics rather than artistry.
Boats. Several Lake Como venues are easiest to reach by water. Villa del Balbianello, for example, is reached either on foot from Lenno, an uphill path of about one kilometre that takes roughly 25 minutes, or by a paid taxi boat from Lido di Lenno that must be reserved and is not run by the venue. A photographer new to the lake can lose half an hour of portrait light working this out. A local team builds it into your timeline months ahead.
FAI slots. Villa del Balbianello belongs to FAI, the Italian National Trust. Its own rules state that photo services, weddings included, are charged and must be booked in advance. Public opening runs from 10:00 to 18:00 on most days except Monday and Wednesday, so a photo session outside a private event means planning around visitors and a confirmed slot. Konstantyn and Mariya photographed Brittany and Jason's wedding at Villa Balbianello, so these rules are part of our ordinary planning.
There is also the scouting gap. A photographer who lands on Thursday sees your venue for the first time on Friday, often at midday, when the light tells you little about how the terrace will look at golden hour. A team that lives here has usually walked those gardens at every hour and in every season.
Permits and venue rules. Each villa sets its own terms for outside vendors, and they change. A team that works here every season tends to know whom to email and what to ask before your contract is signed, which keeps surprises off the wedding day.
When Flying Yours In Still Makes Sense
Flying your photographer in still makes sense in a few clear situations. If someone has photographed your family for years, or you love a style you cannot find anywhere else, the travel line may be worth every dollar. The same applies if your photographer already travels to Italy often and can show galleries from your venue or a nearby one.
If you choose that route, make the comparison fair. Ask for travel as its own itemised line, confirm who books and pays for flights and hotels, and check that the timeline allows a rest day after landing. For how to weigh style, experience and fit, see how to choose a destination wedding photographer.
The point is not that a flown in photographer is the wrong choice. It is that the travel line deserves the same scrutiny as the venue rental, which is why the worksheet above matters. For the wider picture of fees at the lake, see our guide to wedding photography cost at Lake Como.
We photograph a limited number of weddings each year, with weddings from 7,000 EUR and engagement or proposal sessions from 1,800 EUR. If you would like to compare our quote against a travel worksheet for your own date, check your date with us and tell us your venue. You can also read reviews from couples we photographed.
Frequently Asked Questions About Photographer Travel Fees
Do destination wedding photographers charge travel fees?
Most do, either as a separate line or folded into a destination package. Ask which one you are looking at, so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Is it cheaper to hire a photographer based in Italy?
For a Lake Como wedding, a team based at the lake removes the flight and hotel lines, which on our worksheet typically come to 3,500 to 9,000 USD for a US team of two. Whether the total is lower depends on the two photography fees themselves.
Can we bring our own photographer to a Lake Como villa?
Usually yes, but the venue's rules apply to every vendor. At Villa del Balbianello, for example, photo services are charged and must be booked with FAI in advance, so ask your venue before your photographer books flights.
Who pays for the photographer's hotel during the wedding weekend?
The couple, either directly or inside the travel fee. Agree in writing on the number of nights and rooms, and whether the hotel is booked by you or by the photographer.
How do we check that a photographer has worked at our venue before?
Ask for a full gallery from that venue rather than a few highlights. Our guide on choosing the right Lake Como photographer for you covers what to ask.
Does a Lake Como team charge travel for weddings elsewhere in Italy or Europe?
Travel outside the lake normally appears on the quote, so ask for it as a separate line. From Lake Como, most of Italy is a train ride or a drive, which keeps that line far smaller than a transatlantic trip.
