Is a Lake Como Wedding Cheaper Than a US Wedding? Honest Numbers

The Short Answer: Fewer Guests, More Days, Rarely Less Money

Is a destination wedding in Italy cheaper than a wedding at home? At the same guest count, usually not: a Lake Como villa wedding for 60 guests costs roughly what a comfortable Hamptons wedding of the same size costs, and both sit far above the US average. Italy turns into the smaller bill only when the guest list shrinks, which it usually does once every guest has to fly.

The public numbers point the same way. The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study, based on 10,474 US couples married in 2025, puts the average US wedding at $34,000 for 117 guests, about $292 per guest. For foreign couples marrying in Italy, the Centro Studi Turistici di Firenze found an average of about €61,500 per wedding in 2024 and an average of 63.2 guests: roughly twice the money for about half the people.

Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak photograph weddings at Lake Como for couples who fly in from the US, the UK and beyond. Below you will find US averages and a luxury Hamptons benchmark set against dated Lake Como line items, the places where Italy costs more and less, and one like for like example at 60 guests priced in both places.

Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of 21 October 2026, 1 EUR = 1.1234 USD. All Lake Como totals are typical ranges with our reasoning, not quotes. For the full Italian picture, category by category, read our Italy destination wedding cost breakdown for 2026.

US Averages and a Hamptons Benchmark Next to Lake Como Line Items

The US average. The Knot Worldwide published its 2026 Real Weddings Study in February 2026: an average spend of $34,000, an average of 117 guests and 13 wedding professionals per wedding.

The AP comparison. In the summer of 2025 the Associated Press reported on American couples choosing Italy. It set The Knot's average hometown spend of $32,000 for 2024 against an average of €61,500, then about $70,600, for a foreign wedding in Italy, typically with dozens fewer guests. The same story noted that more than 15,000 foreign couples married in Italy that year and that US couples made up almost a third of them. Milano Finanza reported the 2025 update in February 2026: nearly 17,000 foreign weddings, an average spend of €67,000, US couples at 31.7 percent and Lake Como first among Italian destinations.

The Hamptons benchmark. The fair comparison for a Lake Como villa is not the national average but a US luxury market. Social Life Magazine's guide of November 2025 puts a budget conscious Hamptons wedding at $75,000 to $100,000, a comfortable one at $150,000 to $250,000, and luxury weddings easily above $500,000. Its line items: premium estates often above $50,000 for rental alone, catering from $150 to more than $400 per person, a premium open bar at $75 to $150 per guest, established photographers at $8,000 to $15,000, and a tent at $10,000 to $50,000 or more.

Lake Como line items. WeddingItaly's Lake Como cost guide, on a page carrying a 2026 copyright, lists event only villa rental at €15,000 to €60,000 and a full buyout with rooms at €80,000 to €200,000 or more. It gives catering at €150 to €300 or more per guest, about $169 to $337, flowers from €6,000 to above €60,000, music from €3,000 to above €20,000, and its own planning service at €6,000 to €10,000. On the water, Navigazione Laghi quotes a Rondine series motorboat, which carries up to 105 people, from €1,800 plus 10% VAT for eight hours with up to four of sailing. Our own wedding photography starts from 7,000 EUR, always with both of us.

One more difference when you read Italian quotes: they are often given net of VAT. The standard rate in Italy is 22%, while catering and hotel accommodation fall under the reduced 10% rate, so check every line before you compare it with a US invoice. To see how those lines add up to a total, read where a Lake Como wedding budget actually goes.

Where Lake Como Costs More and Where It Costs Less

Lake Como costs more per guest. Divide the Italian averages and a foreign wedding works out at roughly €970 per guest, about $1,090, against The Knot's $292 per guest at home. Part of that is the location and the level of vendors, and part is that a smaller list spreads the fixed costs over fewer people. A planner, a photography team and a florist cost much the same whether 60 or 117 guests sit at dinner.

It costs more in days. A guest who flies from New York to Milan expects more than one evening, so many Lake Como weddings become a weekend with a welcome dinner and often a farewell brunch. Every extra event brings back catering, music, flowers and transport.

It costs more in logistics. Villas on the water need boats or coaches for every guest, both ways. Planning from abroad also makes a local planner close to essential, and your own flights, rooms and the extra nights around the wedding sit on top of the venue budget.

It can cost less on the venue itself. In the Hamptons, estate rental can pass $50,000 before a tent, and Social Life notes that tents need flooring, lighting, climate control and portable facilities as well. A Lake Como villa with terraces and halls of its own can host dinner without building a temporary room. Catering per head sits in the same band or lower, about $169 to $337 against $150 to more than $400 in the Hamptons, before a bar at another $75 to $150 per guest.

It costs less in gratuities. Social Life budgets 18 to 22 percent in gratuities on vendor invoices in the Hamptons. In Italy many contracts already include service, and Italian vendors do not expect American scale tips; our vendor tipping guide for Lake Como weddings sets out what is customary.

And the guest list is the biggest lever. The real saving at Lake Como comes from inviting fewer people, not from cheaper vendors. If your hometown list would be 150 and your Italian list is 60, Italy may cost less in total. If you would invite the same 60 people at home, it rarely does.

A Like for Like Example: 60 Guests in the Hamptons and at a Lake Como Villa

Here is one example priced both ways, for 60 guests, with vendors at the level of the venue. The Hamptons figures come from the Social Life Magazine ranges above and the Lake Como figures from the WeddingItaly and Navigazione Laghi figures. Both are typical ranges built from those sources, not quotes.

Hamptons, one day, 60 guests. Estate rental $30,000 to $50,000 or more, a tent $10,000 to $30,000 if the estate needs one, catering at $250 to $400 per person ($15,000 to $24,000), an open bar at $75 to $150 per guest ($4,500 to $9,000), photography $8,000 to $15,000, flowers and rentals $6,000 to $30,000, gratuities of 18 to 22 percent on those service invoices (about $6,000 to $17,000) and guest transport $1,000 to $3,000. That comes to roughly $70,000 to $180,000 before a planner, music, video and the rehearsal dinner. Add those and most couples land in the $150,000 to $250,000 band Social Life calls comfortable.

Lake Como villa, welcome dinner plus the wedding day, 60 guests. Event only villa rental €15,000 to €60,000, wedding dinner at €150 to €300 per guest (€9,000 to €18,000), a simpler welcome dinner that we estimate at €6,000 to €12,000, a planner €6,000 to €10,000, flowers €6,000 to €30,000, music €3,000 to €10,000, photography from €7,000 to about €15,000 and one chartered motorboat for the guests from €1,800 plus VAT. That is roughly €54,000 to €157,000 before VAT; at 10% on catering and the boat and 22% on the rest, roughly €65,000 to €190,000, about $73,000 to $213,000. The low end sits close to the €61,500 Italian average for 63 guests, and the high end is where a premium villa and serious design take you.

So at the same 60 guests, Lake Como and the Hamptons cost about the same, and Lake Como includes a second evening. What differs is who pays for travel: your guests usually cover their own flights and rooms, while you cover your own trip and often the welcome dinner. Couples who come out ahead are the ones who trade a long hometown list for a shorter one and more time with the people on it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Italy vs US Wedding Costs

Is it cheaper to get married in Italy than in the US?

Only if the guest list gets smaller. The average foreign wedding in Italy cost about €61,500 in 2024 against The Knot's US average of $34,000 for 2025, but with about 63 guests instead of 117. At the same guest count and the same level of vendors, Lake Como is rarely cheaper than a US luxury market.

How much does a Lake Como wedding cost in dollars?

For 60 guests at a villa with a welcome dinner, roughly €65,000 to €190,000 including VAT, about $73,000 to $213,000 at the ECB rate of 21 October 2026 (1 EUR = 1.1234 USD). Rates move, so convert again when your quotes arrive in euros.

Is a Lake Como wedding cheaper than a Hamptons wedding?

At the same guest count they cost about the same. Lake Como can save on the tent, the bar and gratuities, and spends more on boats, the planner and a second evening. Social Life Magazine puts a comfortable Hamptons wedding at $150,000 to $250,000.

Do guests pay their own travel to a destination wedding in Italy?

Usually yes: guests book their own flights and rooms, and couples often arrange a room block or a list of hotels. Couples tend to cover transport on the wedding day, the welcome dinner and sometimes a farewell brunch.

Do we need to tip vendors in Italy the way we would at home?

No. Many Italian contracts include service, and vendors do not expect the 18 to 22 percent common in the Hamptons. Modest tips in euro cash, in labelled envelopes, are appreciated; our tipping guide gives typical amounts by vendor.

How many guests usually travel to a Lake Como wedding?

Across Italy, foreign weddings averaged 63.2 guests in 2024, according to the Centro Studi Turistici di Firenze, and 56.1 percent had between 51 and 100 guests. At Lake Como the range runs from elopements for two to weekends for well over 100, so venue capacity matters as much as the average.
