Where Villa Bonomi Is and Why It Belongs on a Lake Como Shortlist
A Villa Bonomi wedding takes place at a private villa on the hillside above the western shore of Lake Como, inside the city of Como and roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car from the town center. The house is surrounded by a terraced garden designed by the landscape architect Pietro Porcinai, with open views over the first basin of the lake, and it suits couples who want a whole house and garden to themselves within about an hour of Milan Malpensa.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak photographed Christine and Brandon's wedding at Villa Bonomi, which was later featured in Brides, and the photographs on this page come from that wedding. The gallery tells the story of their day. This guide answers what the gallery cannot: where exactly the villa sits, how the garden levels work for a ceremony and portraits, what the house can host, and how guests get there from Como and the airport.
Villa Bonomi publishes far less than the famous estates further up the lake, so we keep to what the villa states on its own site, what published sources confirm and what we have seen while working there. Where a figure such as seated dinner capacity is not published, we say so and tell you what to ask. Because the villa sits inside the city limits, it also pairs easily with a ceremony or portraits in town, and our guide to wedding photography in Como city covers the cathedral, the lakefront and the funicular up to Brunate.
The Porcinai Garden Through the Day: Ceremony, Terraces and Stairs
The garden is the main reason couples shortlist Villa Bonomi. It is the work of Pietro Porcinai (1910 to 1986), one of the founders of AIAPP, the Italian Association of Landscape Architecture, and of the International Federation of Landscape Architects. When AIAPP opened four Porcinai gardens in Lombardy to the public in October 2010, this one was shown as the garden of Villa Ratti.
Italian press coverage of the villa dates the house to the 1920s and credits a renovation around 1960 to the Milanese architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni for Antonio Ratti, the Como silk entrepreneur who founded the Ratti textile business in 1945. According to the villa, the garden falls in several levels linked by stone stairs and paths that wrap around the house, with broad terraces, a circular parterre, a pool and a promenade along the edge of the woods. The pool floor is laid in blue mosaic designed to avoid harsh reflections, a small detail that also helps in photographs.
For a ceremony, a lawn or terrace on the lake side is the natural choice. Guests face the water, and behind the couple the view runs across the first basin to the rooftops of Como and the wooded slope of Brunate. That also means the couple faces back toward the house and the late sun, so we suggest a ceremony time after your spot has fallen into even shade.
Because the villa sits on the western side of the basin, the evening sun drops behind the house and the slope above it rather than over the water. Parts of the garden can move into open shade before sunset while the far shore toward Como and Brunate still catches the light. We walk the garden at the ceremony hour a day ahead, because which terrace sits in even shade changes through the afternoon, and that is where family photographs go.
The stone stairs between levels give couple portraits depth without leaving the garden, and the upper terraces look down on the parterre for a graphic overhead frame. The walk along the woods gives quieter images while guests are at the aperitivo.
The view is the main difference from Villa Pizzo, another private estate near Como. At Villa Pizzo you are at the water's edge in Cernobbio and the lake sits at eye level. At Villa Bonomi you look down and across the basin, which gives wider, more architectural frames and the lights of the city at dusk.
What the Villa Can Host: Guests, Ceremony Type, Suites and Rain Plan
Villa Bonomi presents itself as a private villa with suites rather than as an event venue. The villa lists 11 suites from 13 to 41 square meters across three floors and a separate annex, each facing either the lake or the park, and a luxury rental listing puts the house at up to 22 overnight guests. In practice that covers the couple, parents and the closest family or wedding party, with everyone else in hotels in Como or Cernobbio.
Event capacity is not published on the villa's own website. One wedding directory lists Villa Bonomi for up to 260 guests, which is best read as a ceiling for a garden event rather than a seated dinner figure. Before you commit, ask for a floor plan of the dinner layout you want, whether tables go on a terrace or the lawn, and how many seats fit there with a dance floor. If Villa Bonomi is one of several options, our guide to choosing a Lake Como venue for your guest count helps you compare it with larger and smaller estates.
In the city of Como, civil weddings are performed at Palazzo Cernezzi, the town hall, free of charge, or at Villa Olmo for a 500 EUR fee, according to city figures reported in 2024. The city has also invited private villas and hotels to apply as additional civil venues. Villa Bonomi does not advertise a civil licence, so plan on a symbolic ceremony in the garden and complete the legal marriage at home or at the town hall. Our guide to how a symbolic ceremony works at a private villa covers the format, and your planner should confirm the current list of civil venues with the comune before you print invitations.
Ask for the rain plan in writing too. The house has several salons, which suit getting ready, a small dinner or a ceremony for close family, but the villa publishes no indoor capacity, so a larger group needs a marquee option agreed in advance. Set a decision time on the morning of the wedding, and confirm the cutoff for amplified music outdoors, since the villa sits on a residential hillside.
Getting Ready, Guests and Transfers From Como and Malpensa
Getting ready at the villa is simple because you can dress in separate suites under one roof. With two photographers, one of us stays with each of you through the morning, and the bright salons give clean, window lit portraits before the first look or the ceremony. Rental listings for the house include an elevator, which helps grandparents and anyone carrying dresses and florals between floors.
For guests, distances are short. The villa is about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the center of Como and a similar drive from Cernobbio, so hotels in either town work as a base. Milan Malpensa is about 53 kilometers away, usually around an hour by car and longer at peak traffic.
Because the villa sits on a residential hillside rather than on the lakeshore road, ask which vehicle sizes can reach the gate before you book shuttles from the hotels. Build the guest timeline around the slowest vehicle rather than the fastest; a shuttle loop from Como or Cernobbio is short enough to run twice before the ceremony if needed.
Villa Bonomi sits above the lake rather than on it, so a boat ride for portraits starts from the shore below. The closest public ferry stop is Tavernola, on the lakeshore road toward Cernobbio, a ride of around ten minutes by scheduled boat from Como's main pier. If you want a private boat for sunset portraits, your planner arranges the pickup point on the shore, and the timeline needs to allow for the short drive down and back.
We photograph a limited number of weddings each year, at Villa Bonomi and across Lake Como, with wedding collections from 7,000 EUR. To see how the villa photographs across a whole celebration, from the pre wedding session and the welcome dinner to the wedding day itself, look through Christine and Brandon's full wedding at Villa Bonomi. If the villa is on your shortlist, check your date with us and tell us your guest count, and we will share how we would plan the light for your timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Bonomi Weddings
Where exactly is Villa Bonomi and how far is it from Como and Malpensa airport?
The villa is at Via Bignanico 65 in Como, on the hillside of the Tavernola area between the town center and Cernobbio, on the western side of the lake's first basin. Central Como is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car, and Milan Malpensa is about 53 kilometers away, usually around an hour's drive.
Can we have a legal ceremony at Villa Bonomi or only a symbolic one?
The villa does not advertise a civil licence, and civil weddings in Como take place at the town hall, Palazzo Cernezzi, or at Villa Olmo. Plan a symbolic ceremony in the garden with the legal marriage done separately, and ask your planner to check whether the city has since added the villa to its civil venues.
How many guests can Villa Bonomi seat for dinner?
The villa does not publish a seated figure. A wedding directory lists up to 260 guests, but the seated number depends on whether tables go on the lawn or a terrace and how much space the dance floor takes, so ask for a plan of your exact layout.
Can the couple and guests stay overnight at the villa?
The house has 11 suites across three floors and an annex, and a rental listing gives it a capacity of up to 22 guests. That is enough for the couple and close family, while most of the guest list stays in hotels in Como or Cernobbio.
What is the rain plan if the garden ceremony cannot go ahead?
The salons may suit a small ceremony or dinner, but the villa publishes no indoor capacity. For a larger group, agree a marquee option in your contract, including where it would stand in the garden, and set a decision time on the morning of the wedding.
When is the best light for portraits in the Porcinai garden?
The last hour before sunset and the blue hour after it, when the lights of Como come on across the water. Official sunset at the villa is around 9:20 pm in late June and 7:40 pm in mid September, but the slope and trees behind the house can take direct sun off parts of the garden earlier, so we check it at that hour the day before.
