Why Dawn Is the Quiet Hour in Bellagio and Varenna
A Lake Como sunrise photoshoot is the simplest way to have Bellagio or Varenna almost to yourselves. In the first hour after dawn the lanes, stairways and docks are quiet, the light is soft and low, and you can walk from one frame to the next without waiting for a crowd to clear.
The crowds are real. Villa Monastero in Varenna sold 396,782 tickets in 2025, up from 363,050 in 2024, according to the Lecco edition of Il Giorno. Bellagio has the same rhythm: travel writers who visit in August describe the centre as packed around midday, then calmer once the day trippers leave in the afternoon. Evening is the other quiet window, but by then the ferries have been bringing visitors in all day.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak live at Lake Como and photograph couples here through the whole year, so the timing in this article comes from how the towns actually wake up. Below you will find why the villa gardens are not part of a dawn plan, a sample 90 minute route, and what a session costs. For the full picture of sessions on the lake, start with our Lake Como engagement session guide; if you are weighing morning against evening, read how golden hour light works at Lake Como.
Lanes, Docks and Why Villa Gardens Open Later
The first thing to know about dawn at Lake Como is that the famous gardens are still locked. On the current timetables, Villa del Balbianello opens from 10:00, closed on Mondays and Wednesdays, with booking required through FAI. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo opens at 10:00. The Villa Melzi gardens in Bellagio open at 10:00 and close for winter from 2 November, reopening at the end of March. The Villa Monastero botanical garden opens at 10:00 through March 2027 and at 9:30 from April to September 2027.
So a sunrise session uses the public side of the towns: lakefront walkways, stepped lanes, small harbours and ferry docks before the first crowds arrive. In Varenna that means the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, the lakeside walkway that runs from the Olivedo ferry area towards the Riva Grande, and the stepped lanes that climb from the water into the old village. In Bellagio it means Salita Serbelloni, the cobbled stairway off Via Garibaldi that travel guides call the most photographed street in town, and the lakefront path out to Punta Spartivento, the tip of the peninsula where the branches of the lake meet.
Orientation matters too. Varenna sits on the eastern shore with the mountains rising directly behind it, so in the early morning the village is often in open shade while the light touches the western shore across the water first. Open shade on faces with lit mountains behind is one of the most flattering combinations on the lake, and it is very hard to find at noon.
If a villa garden matters to you, it can follow the dawn walk rather than replace it. Villa Monastero accepts private photo sessions during garden opening hours at a published 2025 rate of 300 EUR per hour, which admits two people and the photographers, with booking at least 14 days ahead. Its FAQ states that the garden stays open to the public during these sessions, and that a session during closing hours can be requested at a higher rate. Villa Melzi lists photo services at 350 EUR plus VAT for the whole day. Both villas exclude decorations and music, and Melzi also excludes drones and exclusive use.
A Sample 90 Minute Sunrise Route
Here is how a 90 minute dawn route usually looks in Varenna. We meet in Olivedo, near the ferry landing, while it is still blue outside. The first 20 minutes stay on the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, where the walkway hangs over the water and the lake is often still enough to mirror the far shore. This is where we take the wider frames, with the two of you small against the lake and the mountains.
The middle 40 minutes move into the village. The stepped lanes between the harbour and the upper streets give close, quiet portraits: stone walls, shutters, a doorway, the lake showing at the end of a passage. As the sky brightens, we come back down to the Riva Grande and the small harbour, where the boats are still tied up and the water is calm. The final 30 minutes are looser, walking, sitting on the steps of a dock, sharing a coffee as the first cafés open. If you have booked a Villa Monastero slot, that is the moment to walk over for an hour in the garden once it opens.
In Bellagio the same 90 minutes might start at the top of Salita Serbelloni, turn around for the view down the stairway to the lake, follow the lanes down to the lakefront, then walk the promenade out to Punta Spartivento for open water on three sides. For a high view instead of village lanes, the Como to Brunate funicular runs from 6:00 to midnight, with a journey of seven minutes, according to the operator ATM.
Which town to choose depends on what you want to see in the frames. Varenna is more compact and vertical, with colour on the houses and a walkway right on the water. Bellagio has longer lanes and that open point at Spartivento. If you are still choosing a setting, our overview of the best engagement session locations at Lake Como compares the main options.
We do not publish exact sunrise times here, because they move through the year and with the mountains on each shore. We set the meeting time for your date and town when we plan the session, usually so that we start in blue light and have the best of the soft light while the lanes are still empty.
Planning Your Session and What It Costs
Stay where you are shooting the night before. Navigazione Laghi publishes separate ferry timetables for each season, and dawn rarely lines up with a convenient crossing, so a hotel in Varenna or Bellagio turns an early start into a short walk. If you are staying elsewhere, a private car or taxi boat is usually easier than planning around the first public boat of the day.
Keep the team small and the setup simple. A dawn session in public lanes works best with the two of you and us, with no stands, props or decorations. This is also what keeps it quiet for the residents who live along those stairways. For hair and makeup, plan on an artist who starts before first light, or choose a natural look you are comfortable doing yourselves.
Think about the season. In late spring and summer the light comes early, and the reward is the emptiest towns you will see all day. In autumn the sun rises later and the air over the lake can be misty, which gives softer, quieter frames. Morning is cool by the water in any month, so bring a layer you are happy to wear in some photos and take off for others.
For an idea of how a session moves through a lakeside town, see a Menaggio engagement session on our portfolio, and for a villa garden setting, Andrea and Jonah's session at Villa Monastero.
Engagement and proposal sessions start from 1,800 EUR, and any villa garden fee is paid to the villa on top. We photograph a limited number of sessions and weddings each year, and we plan every dawn route around the town and the season you choose. When you know your dates, check your date with us and tell us which town you are staying in; we will suggest a route and a meeting time.
Frequently Asked Questions About a Lake Como Sunrise Photoshoot
What time should a sunrise photoshoot at Lake Como start?
We set the meeting time for your date and town, usually so that we begin in the blue light before the sun clears the mountains. Sunrise moves through the year and the mountains change when the light reaches each shore, so we plan it for your session rather than giving one fixed time.
Can we shoot inside villa gardens at sunrise?
Normally not. Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi and the Villa Monastero garden open at 9:30 or 10:00 depending on season. Villa Monastero states that a session during closing hours can be requested at a higher rate, so ask the villa directly if a garden at dawn is essential.
Is Bellagio or Varenna better for a sunrise session?
Varenna is compact, with the lakeside walkway and stepped lanes close together, which suits a 90 minute route. Bellagio has the stairway of Salita Serbelloni and the open point at Punta Spartivento. Choose the town where you are staying, since that saves the early transfer.
Do we need a permit for a photoshoot in Lake Como towns?
Villa gardens set their own rules and fees, as Villa Monastero and Villa Melzi do. For the public lanes and lakefronts we keep sessions small, with no props or set pieces, and we check the current local rules for your date before we confirm the route.
What should we wear for an early morning session by the lake?
Soft, natural colours that sit well with stone and water, and a light layer, because mornings by the lake are cool. Choose shoes you can walk in on cobbles and steps, then change into dressier ones for the closer portraits.
How do we reach Brunate for a sunrise view?
Take the funicular from Como. The operator ATM lists service from 6:00 to midnight and a journey of seven minutes, and it occasionally closes for planned works, so check the timetable for your date.
