Neighbours in Cernobbio Built for Different Weddings
Villa Pizzo vs Villa Erba is really a choice between two formats. Villa Pizzo is a 17th century residence with a long terraced garden on the water, suited to a wedding of up to around 150 guests, while Villa Erba is a 19th century villa inside a 100,000 square metre park with a modern congress centre, built for much larger guest lists. The two estates are about 1.6 km apart by road in Cernobbio, so you are not choosing between two parts of the lake, only between two ways of hosting the day.
Konstantyn and Mariya have photographed weddings at both estates, and the difference shows long before the first photograph. At Pizzo your guests move along a strip of gardens between the hillside terraces and the lake. At Erba they gather in a walled park with wide lawns, a private pier and halls that can absorb a guest list in the hundreds.
This guide compares how each estate uses its space, the guest counts quoted by venue sources, the rooms question, what is known about legal ceremonies and how late the music can run. We also cover how each one photographs: Pizzo from the water, Erba in its park. For a closer look at either venue on its own, read our Villa Pizzo wedding photography guide or the Villa Erba wedding photography guide.
Garden, Park and Halls: How Each Estate Uses Its Space
Villa Pizzo stands on the promontory that divides Cernobbio from Moltrasio, and its own website notes that the villa is entirely visible only from the lake. The Muggiasca family bought the land in 1435 and kept it for more than four centuries. The dry stone terraces still visible in the park date from the plague years of 1629, and the landscape architect Luigi Villoresi gave the park its final layout.
The garden is a sequence of different gardens rather than one lawn. There is an Italian garden around a large camphor tree, a fountain shaded by a centuries old magnolia, a lemon house, roses trained along the lakeside wall and a sunny western zone the villa calls Genova, planted with agave and olives. At the water sits the darsena, a 19th century stone basin surrounded by original statues, where the villa places the vows. Inside, neoclassical frescoed halls host the cocktail hour and the courtyard is used for dinner.
Villa Erba works on a different scale. Luigi Erba, brother of the pharmaceutical founder Carlo Erba, built it in the 19th century. It later passed to his daughter Carla, mother of the film director Luchino Visconti, and since 1986 it has belonged to a public consortium that runs it as an exhibition and congress centre. The official site lists a 100,000 square metre park and a 10,000 square metre congress centre designed by Mario Bellini.
For a wedding that means lawns inside high walls, a private pier for guests arriving by boat and, according to a planner who works there, an area where helicopters can land. Receptions are held in one of the inside halls or under a marquee in the park, depending on the size of the group, and for a large ceremony a platform can be built over the pier so the vows happen above the water.
Guest Count, Rooms, Ceremony Licence and Late Music
Guest count. Villa Pizzo is the smaller venue. A planner who works there gives up to 150 guests for an exclusive hire, with up to 120 seated indoors across four connected halls that all face the lake, and a marquee in the courtyard for 150. The Muggiasca hall, the largest, seats around 60 for dinner. Some listings quote up to 200, so treat 150 as the comfortable figure and confirm it with the villa.
Villa Erba figures vary because the property is also a congress centre. The official site gives a total capacity of 4,500 with 1,400 plenary seats, and one wedding listing quotes receptions for up to 600 guests. One planner notes it works best for events of at least 40 to 50 people. If your list is above 150, Erba is the realistic option of the two. Below about 80, Pizzo will feel fuller and more personal, while Erba's halls can feel empty unless the layout is planned carefully.
Rooms. Neither estate has guest bedrooms. Planner sources state that accommodation is not available at Villa Pizzo, with hotels within a ten minute drive, and that Villa Erba has no rooms on site, with hotels in Cernobbio and Como a few minutes away. Budget for a hotel block and evening transfers whichever villa you choose.
Ceremony licence. Sources conflict. One planner states that Villa Erba is not licensed for civil legally binding ceremonies, while some directory listings describe civil celebrations there. We found no source listing Villa Pizzo as a licensed civil venue, and its own wedding page places the vows at the darsena without naming the ceremony type. The safe plan is a short legal ceremony at a licensed venue and a symbolic ceremony at the villa, but confirm the current list of approved locations with the Comune di Cernobbio. Our guide to civil ceremonies at Lake Como town halls explains how that works.
Late music. At Pizzo, according to a planner there, outdoor music stops at 11 pm and the party can continue indoors into the early hours by agreement. At Erba, the same planner notes that dancing indoors is allowed until 4 am. These terms sit in the venue contract and can change, so ask for them in writing before you sign.
Photographing Pizzo from the Water and Erba in the Park
Because Pizzo is fully visible only from the lake, the strongest wide photograph of the estate is taken from a boat. We plan a short boat session for the couple, ideally in the last hour before sunset, so the long run of terraces, the pink and yellow facade and the darsena read in one frame. Inside the garden, portraits work best as a walk through the separate gardens, from the camphor tree in the Italian garden down to the roses and statues by the water.
Erba rewards a different approach. The park is big enough to find quiet corners away from guests during the cocktail hour, and the pier gives a clean water frame for portraits without a boat. With a guest list in the hundreds, working as two photographers matters even more: one of us stays with the couple while the other covers the guests, the speeches and the room as it fills.
The short distance also makes a two venue weekend practical. The estates sit about 1.6 km apart along Via Regina, a few minutes by car, so a smaller welcome evening in the Pizzo garden and a larger wedding day at Erba is an easy split, or the reverse if you want the intimate garden for the main day. Allow extra time for traffic on Via Regina and keep the timeline loose between events.
You can see how each estate looks on a real day in Laura and Eric's wedding at Villa Pizzo and Sara and Yusef's wedding at Villa Erba. We photograph a limited number of weddings each year as a team of two, on film and digital, with weddings from 7,000 EUR. If one of these villas is on your shortlist, check your date with us and tell us your guest count, and we will share how we would plan the light at that estate.
Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Pizzo and Villa Erba
Which is better for a large wedding, Villa Pizzo or Villa Erba?
Villa Erba. Its park covers 100,000 square metres and one wedding listing quotes receptions for up to 600 guests, while Villa Pizzo is comfortable at up to around 150 for an exclusive hire. Above 150 guests, Erba is the realistic choice.
Can we have a legal ceremony at Villa Erba or Villa Pizzo?
Plan on a symbolic ceremony at either villa. One planner states that Villa Erba is not licensed for legally binding civil ceremonies, other listings disagree, and we found no source showing a civil licence at Villa Pizzo. Confirm with the Comune di Cernobbio and hold the legal part at a licensed venue if needed.
Do either of the villas have rooms for guests?
No. Neither estate offers accommodation on site, so you will need a hotel block in Cernobbio or Como and transfers at the end of the night.
Can we use both villas in the same wedding weekend?
Yes, and it is practical because they are about 1.6 km apart by road along Via Regina. You will be working with two separate venues, so plan two sets of catering, music and timing agreements.
How late can music play at each villa?
According to a planner who works at both, outdoor music at Villa Pizzo stops at 11 pm with the party able to continue indoors by agreement, and indoor dancing at Villa Erba is allowed until 4 am. Get the current terms in your contract.
Where should guests stay for a Cernobbio wedding?
Hotels in Cernobbio and Como are a few minutes from both estates. Villa d'Este sits on Via Regina between them, and Como town gives you a wider range of hotels for a large guest list.
