Como's Civic Villa as a Setting for a Legal Wedding
A Villa Olmo wedding is a legally binding civil ceremony held by the Comune di Como inside its own neoclassical villa on the lakefront, either in the Sala Ovale or in the small Tempietto in the park. Local press in 2022 and 2023 reported the fee as 500 EUR including VAT, with ceremonies offered from April to October, which makes it the most accessible historic setting for a legal wedding in Como town.
Villa Olmo was commissioned by Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi from the Ticino architect Simone Cantoni, and the City of Como has owned it since 1924. Its park opens onto the western arm of Como's first basin, a short walk from the town centre along the Passeggiata Lino Gelpi. Because the villa belongs to the city, the ceremony is a civic act, celebrated by the mayor or an officiant of the Stato Civile, and the marriage is registered in Italy on the day.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak are a two photographer team based at Lake Como, and Como town is home ground for them. This guide explains the two ceremony settings, what is confirmed about fees and season, how couples pair a morning or afternoon ceremony here with a reception at a private villa, and where to take portraits in the park and along the lakefront.
If you are still comparing ceremony formats around the lake, our guide to civil ceremonies at Lake Como town halls covers how Italian civil weddings work for foreign couples, and the complete guide to Lake Como wedding photography puts the whole day in context.
Sala Ovale or the Park Tempietto: Fees, Season and Booking
The two settings. The Comune offers two places for a civil ceremony at Villa Olmo: the Sala Ovale, an oval reception room inside the villa, and the Tempietto, a small temple structure in the park. The Sala Ovale suits couples who want a guaranteed indoor setting and the formality of the villa's interiors. The Tempietto puts you outdoors among the trees of the park, with the lake a few steps away, and it photographs with more air and green around you. Neither setting is suited to a very large guest list, so ask the Stato Civile for the current capacity of each before you finalise numbers.
The fee. Trend Online reported in June 2022 that a civil ceremony at Villa Olmo costs 500 EUR including VAT, and Espansione TV repeated the 500 EUR figure in September 2023. Neither article mentions a different rate for residents and non residents. By contrast, ceremonies in the council chamber or the giunta room of Palazzo Cernezzi, Como's town hall, carry no fee. We have not found a current official price list from the Comune, so treat 500 EUR as the most recent reported figure and confirm it in writing when you book.
Season and days. The 2022 report gives the ceremony season at Villa Olmo as April to October. Available days and time slots are set by the Stato Civile, and the villa also hosts exhibitions and events, so your date depends on both calendars. Ask which weekdays and Saturdays are offered and whether a ceremony slot moves if an exhibition is being installed.
Flowers and dressing the space. The Comune allows couples to decorate the chosen setting with flowers at their own discretion and expense. In practice, that means your florist works within a public building and a public park, so plan for a short setup window and arrangements that can be removed quickly afterwards.
Booking. The request goes through the Ufficio di Stato Civile of the Comune di Como. Foreign couples also need the Italian marriage paperwork completed before the date, including the declaration of intent at the town hall a few days before the ceremony. Our article on the documents American couples need to marry in Italy walks through the sequence. We have not found a published lead time, so contact the Comune as soon as your wedding year is fixed.
Ceremony at Villa Olmo, Reception at a Private Villa
The 500 EUR ceremony fee covers the civil ceremony only. Hiring the whole villa for a private event is a separate negotiation with the City and on a different scale entirely: Trend Online reported in 2022 that the Comune had asked up to 250,000 EUR for exclusive use of the structure, with the spaces to be returned fully restored. Il Giorno reported the same year on a month long exclusive rental of the villa and park for a private celebration at well above that level. For almost every couple, Villa Olmo is a ceremony venue, and the reception happens somewhere else.
That split works well in Como. The town has private villas and lakefront hotels that host dinners but cannot always offer a legal ceremony on site, and a civic ceremony at Villa Olmo fills that gap. A typical shape for the day is a ceremony at Villa Olmo in the late morning or afternoon, a walk through the park for portraits and group photos, then a transfer to the reception villa for aperitivo, dinner and dancing.
Pairing with Villa Geno. Villa Geno sits on Viale Geno, on the eastern arm of the same basin, so the two villas face each other across the water. The walk between them follows the lakefront through the town centre, which is pleasant for a couple and impractical for guests in wedding clothes, so most couples book a car or a coach. A private boat across the basin is a lovely alternative, but ask both venues about landing points before you plan around it. Our guide to Villa Geno weddings in Como town covers the reception side.
Timing the transfer. Allow time for guests to leave the park on foot, board transport and arrive before the aperitivo starts. The park is open to the public every day, so group photos happen with visitors nearby, and a planner who keeps guests moving makes a real difference. If your ceremony is in the afternoon, the gap between the ceremony and the start of dinner is also your best portrait window, so build it into the timeline rather than squeezing it.
Weighing it against other options. Compared with a free ceremony at Palazzo Cernezzi, Villa Olmo costs a little more and gives you a lakefront setting and a park for photographs. Compared with a symbolic ceremony at your reception villa, it gives you a marriage that is legally complete on the day, without a separate civil ceremony at home.
Portraits in the Public Park and Along the Como Lakefront
The park at Villa Olmo is public and free to enter. Under the regulation the Comune adopted in late 2023, it opens daily from 7:00 to 23:00 between 5 April and 30 September, and from 7:00 to 20:00 between 1 October and 4 April. The same regulation keeps people off the lawn in front of the villa and the green areas by the lake, so portraits there happen from the paths, the terrace and the gravel walks rather than on the grass. We have not found published rules on professional photography in the park, so we ask the Comune about any authorization when we plan a ceremony here.
Where the light falls. The villa's main facade faces the water, so in the late afternoon the sun sits behind the building and the opposite shore, with Brunate above it, takes the warm light. That is the moment for wide frames from the lake edge looking back at the villa, and for portraits along the Passeggiata Lino Gelpi with the basin and the town behind you. Earlier in the day, the trees of the park give soft, even shade for family groups.
The town as a second location. Como offers more than the villa: the lakefront promenade, the Tempio Voltiano, the Duomo and the narrow streets of the old town are all close. A short walk or a few minutes in a car gives you a second set of photographs with a completely different character, stone and city instead of trees and water. We plan this as one compact loop so guests are not left waiting at the reception.

Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Olmo Weddings
How much does a wedding at Villa Olmo cost?
The civil ceremony was reported at 500 EUR including VAT in 2022 and 2023 press, and we have not seen an updated official figure, so confirm it with the Stato Civile. Flowers, transport, your reception venue and vendors are separate. Hiring the entire villa for a private event is a separate negotiation, reported in 2022 at up to 250,000 EUR.
Will a Villa Olmo ceremony be legally valid for an American couple?
Yes, provided your Italian paperwork is complete. The ceremony is a civil marriage celebrated by the Comune di Como, so it is registered in Italy on the day. US couples prepare sworn statements at a US consulate and an Italian consulate, then make a declaration of intent at the town hall before the date.
Can we hold our reception at Villa Olmo?
Only through an exclusive hire negotiated with the City, which has been reported at six figure sums. Most couples hold the ceremony at Villa Olmo and the reception at a private villa or hotel in Como or along the lake.
Which months are ceremonies held at Villa Olmo?
The most recent press reports give April to October. Days and time slots come from the Stato Civile and can depend on exhibitions at the villa, so ask for available dates early.
Can non residents of Como get married at Villa Olmo?
Yes. Italian civil marriage does not require residence in the town where you marry, and the reported fee does not distinguish residents from non residents. You still need the full set of documents for foreign citizens.
How do we get from Villa Olmo to a reception villa on the lake?
For a reception in Como town, such as Villa Geno on the opposite side of the basin, a car or coach through the centre is the usual choice, and a private boat is possible if both venues confirm landing points. For villas further up the lake, plan a coach or a boat transfer and build the travel time into your timeline.
