Lake Como Wedding Venues With Accommodation: Villas Where Guests Stay

Why Sleeping on Site Changes the Whole Wedding Weekend

The best Lake Como wedding venues with accommodation are Villa Balbiano, Villa Pliniana, Villa Làrio, Villa Cipressi, Relais Villa Vittoria and Villa d'Este, where you and your closest guests can sleep at the place you marry. Most of these Lake Como wedding venues with accommodation have between 6 and about 30 rooms, so they house the couple, family and wedding party, while the rest of the guest list stays nearby; only Villa d'Este, with 152 rooms, can sleep a large wedding on site.

That room count is the number to ask for first. Many famous villas on the lake are rented for a few hours and have no bedrooms at all, which means your weekend is built around hotels, shuttles and boats. A villa with suites turns the wedding into a house party: breakfast with your families, getting ready upstairs and a ceremony a short walk away.

Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak have photographed weddings and elopements at several of the houses in this guide, including Relais Villa Vittoria, Villa Cipressi, Villa Balbiano and Villa Bonomi. This article sets out what each venue offers in rooms, which ones require you to take the whole property and for how many nights, which venues have no rooms at all, and how sleeping on site changes the way your day is photographed.

Room counts below come from the venues or from planner and travel listings we read; where sources disagree, we say so. Treat every figure as a starting point for your own questions to the venue, since rooms, minimum stays and buyout rules can change from one season to the next. If you are still mapping out the days around the wedding, our guide to planning a multi day Lake Como wedding weekend is a good companion to this one.

Villas With Rooms: Balbiano, Pliniana, Villa Làrio and Cipressi

Villa Balbiano, Ossuccio. The palazzo on the western shore has six suites in the main house, each designed by the interior decorator Jacques Garcia, and they sleep up to 12 people. Tulle Together, which published the villa's wedding packages, lists a one day event without accommodation for up to 40 guests, a two day package with one night for up to 55 guests, and three day packages with two nights for up to 200 guests. Additional suites and off site rooms are not included, so even at Balbiano most guests sleep in Tremezzina hotels. In practice the suites hold you, your parents and a few of the closest people in your lives.

Villa Pliniana, Torno. This villa on the eastern shore of the Como branch is run by the team behind Il Sereno. Sereno Hotels lists four apartments in the main villa and three separate villas, 19 suites in total for up to 39 overnight guests, while older rental listings give 17 rooms, so confirm the current figure. Its gardens hold up to 500 guests and its two ballrooms up to 200 each, which makes Pliniana one of the few houses where the sleeping party and a large dinner fit on the same property.

Villa Làrio, Pognana Lario. An all suite hotel between the water and the cliffs, with 18 suites spread across separate buildings, an infinity pool and a private dock, according to the Michelin Guide. La Lista notes that the whole estate or the main house alone can be rented, that civil ceremonies are possible on site, and that receptions work for up to 100 guests; a church ceremony is not available on the property. With 18 suites, Villa Làrio can sleep the immediate families and much of the wedding party.

Villa Cipressi, Varenna. A hotel inside the village of Varenna, licensed for civil ceremonies, with terraced gardens down to the lake. Italian Lakes Wedding counts 31 rooms; other listings give 31 to 33. Here guests can sleep, eat and marry under one roof, and the rest of the list can walk in from other hotels in Varenna. Ask the hotel whether exclusive use is available on your date, since on an ordinary booking you share the garden and the breakfast room with other travellers.

Two private rental villas belong in the same conversation. Villa La Cassinella, a private villa with its own rooms in Lenno, is listed with eight bedrooms for around 16 guests. Villa Bonomi, on the hillside above Como, is listed with 11 double suites over three levels for up to 22 guests, with events on request. Both work best as a family base, with the rest of the guests in town.

Hotels and Buyouts: Relais Villa Vittoria and Villa d'Este

Relais Villa Vittoria, Laglio. A small hotel in a 19th century villa on the water, on the western shore between Como and Argegno. The villa's wedding terms, published by Italian Lakes Wedding, state that from April to October a wedding requires booking the entire property with all 12 rooms, for a minimum of one to three nights depending on the dates. Dinner seats up to 68 guests in the main hall, and the villa is licensed for legally binding civil ceremonies as well as symbolic blessings. Some listings also count rooms in Casa Cecilia, an annex close to the villa, so ask whether those rooms are part of the buyout. Our full Relais Villa Vittoria wedding guide covers the spaces, the 30 guest rule for smaller weddings and the published room rates.

Villa d'Este, Cernobbio. The opposite end of the scale: 152 rooms and suites across the Cardinal Building, the Queen's Pavilion and several private villas, in a park of about ten hectares. It is the one venue on the lake where a large wedding can sleep almost entirely on site. We could not find a published rule on room blocks or minimum nights for weddings, so ask the events team whether your contract includes a room commitment. Because it stays a working hotel, other travellers share the property with you unless you negotiate otherwise.

How to compare them. The real choice is between a buyout and a shared property. A buyout, as at Relais Villa Vittoria from April to October, gives you privacy, but you pay for every room, filled or not, for every night of the minimum. A hotel like Villa d'Este lets you reserve only the rooms you need, but the terrace and the lobby are not yours alone. Count the people who must sleep on site: parents, grandparents, the wedding party and anyone with limited mobility. If that number is under 12, almost every house in this guide works. Between 20 and 40, Pliniana, Villa Làrio, Villa Cipressi or Villa d'Este are the realistic options. Above that, plan for a hotel block nearby, which our comparison of a Lake Como hotel against a private villa wedding explains in detail.

Minimum nights. Where a minimum exists, it usually lands on a two or three night weekend: arrival and welcome dinner, the wedding, and a farewell brunch. Read the minimum alongside your plans for the evenings before and after, since a welcome dinner on site is often the best use of nights you are already paying for.

Venues Without Rooms, and How Staying on Site Shapes Coverage

Some of the lake's most photographed venues have no bedrooms. Villa del Balbianello in Lenno is run by FAI and rented in time blocks: up to two hours for a ceremony, up to three with an aperitif and up to six for a full wedding, according to the rental terms published by Italian Lakes Wedding. Nobody sleeps at the villa, so guests stay in Lenno or Tremezzo and arrive by taxi boat or on foot. Villa Erba in Cernobbio also has no accommodation on site; Italian Lakes Wedding points guests to the hotels and B&Bs of Cernobbio and Como, a few minutes away.

For photographs, this difference shapes the first half of the day. At a venue without rooms, you get ready in a hotel, and a transfer by car or boat sits between getting ready and the ceremony. Those minutes have to be planned into your coverage, and the getting ready light depends on the room you happen to book. Our guide to choosing where to get ready at Lake Como walks through what to look for in that room.

When you sleep at the venue, the day starts in the same place it ends. We can photograph details in the suite, families arriving for breakfast and the garden being set while you dress upstairs, then follow you down the stairs to the ceremony without a transfer in between. With two photographers, one of us stays with each of you through the morning, and the hours that would have gone into a boat ride go into the people around you.

Staying on site also changes the evening. When the party ends, the closest guests walk up to bed rather than queue for the last shuttle, so a late dance floor is easier to keep going. Ask about music rules before you assume that, because a house full of sleeping guests and neighbours across the water often comes with an earlier cutoff outdoors.

We photograph a limited number of weddings each year, and a weekend at a villa with rooms is the kind we plan most closely with couples, from the welcome dinner to the farewell brunch. Weddings start from 7,000 EUR, and engagement sessions from 1,800 EUR if you want photographs at the villa before the big day. To see a whole weekend at a house with rooms, look at Tyra and Tristan's wedding at Villa Vittoria or Christine and Brandon's wedding at Villa Bonomi, then check your date with us and tell us which venues are on your shortlist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Como Venues With Accommodation

Which Lake Como wedding villas have rooms for guests?

Villa Balbiano has six suites, Relais Villa Vittoria 12 rooms, Villa Làrio 18 suites, Villa Pliniana up to 19 suites, Villa Cipressi about 31 rooms and Villa d'Este 152 rooms. Private rentals such as Villa La Cassinella and Villa Bonomi add eight to 11 bedrooms. Confirm current counts with each venue, since listings differ.

How many nights do we need to book for a villa buyout?

It depends on the venue and the month. Relais Villa Vittoria states a minimum of one to three nights from April to October, depending on dates, and Villa Balbiano's published overnight packages run one or two nights. Many private villas set their own minimums, so ask for the rule in writing for your exact date.

Can all our guests stay at the wedding venue?

Only at a large hotel such as Villa d'Este, with 152 rooms, or for a small wedding. Most villas sleep between 12 and 39 people, so a wedding of 80 guests will have most of its list in nearby hotels.

Is a villa with rooms cheaper than a hotel room block?

Not necessarily. A buyout means paying for every room for every night of the minimum, whether or not each one is filled, while a hotel block lets you reserve only what you need. Ask the venue whether guests can pay for their own rooms, which changes the math considerably.

Where do guests stay if the venue has no accommodation?

In the nearest town. For Villa del Balbianello that means hotels in Lenno and Tremezzo; for Villa Erba, Cernobbio and Como. Choose one or two hotels on the same shore as the venue so evening transport stays simple.
