Lake Como Villas That Allow Weddings: Legal, Symbolic or Photos

Legal, Symbolic or Photos Only: Why the Villa Decides

Lake Como villas that allow weddings fall into three groups: villas where a legally binding civil ceremony can take place on site, villas that host symbolic ceremonies or blessings only, and villas that allow photographs but no ceremony at all. Among the famous names, Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and Relais Villa Vittoria can host a civil ceremony, Villa Monastero, Villa Erba and Villa d'Este are symbolic or blessing only, and Villa Melzi allows photo shoots but no weddings.

The reason is Italian law, not taste. A civil marriage is celebrated at the town hall, and a villa only counts when the comune has designated it as a separate civil registry office, an ufficio separato di stato civile. The Comune di Como, for example, invited villas and hotels to apply for exactly this status in 2023. A villa without it can still host a beautiful ceremony, but that ceremony has no legal value, and you marry legally somewhere else.

Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak photograph weddings across the lake, and this is one of the first questions couples ask them. Below you will find each villa sorted by what it actually permits, with the source for each status, what that means for your day and your photographs, and the questions to settle in writing before you sign. If you are still choosing a shore, our Tremezzo wedding guide to Lake Como venues covers the villas on the western side.

Civil Licence on Site: Balbianello, Carlotta, Relais Villa Vittoria

Villa del Balbianello, Lenno. FAI, the foundation that manages the villa, states on its rental page that it hosts civil or symbolic wedding ceremonies, with aperitifs or dinners for up to 130 guests. The ceremony takes place in the Loggia Durini, which FAI lists for 80 to 100 people with a maximum of 60 seated, and dinners move to the lake terrace. Planners note that the couple signs a sworn declaration at the town hall a couple of days before the wedding. FAI also states that photo shoots, weddings included, are paid and must be booked in advance, so your photographer's access is part of the contract, not an afterthought.

For photographs, Balbianello is a boat wedding. Guests and the couple usually arrive by water, and the walk up from the landing to the loggia gives you some of the most natural pictures of the day. You can see how the loggia and terraces work for a full celebration in Brittany and Jason's wedding at Villa del Balbianello.

Villa Carlotta, Tremezzo. The villa's private events page offers a civil wedding or a symbolic ceremony on the Terrazza delle Camelie, followed by an aperitif or dinner. The terrace looks across the water towards Bellagio. A civil ceremony here is officiated for the Comune di Tremezzina, and planners mention the same sworn declaration at the town hall a couple of days before. Ask for the current conditions document when you enquire, because the fees and the length of the ceremony slot are set each season. Our page on Villa Carlotta wedding photography shows how the terrace and the gardens photograph.

Relais Villa Vittoria, Laglio. According to Italian Lakes Wedding, this boutique hotel on the western shore is licensed for civil legally binding ceremonies and also allows informal blessings. From April to October you book the entire property with all 12 rooms, for a minimum of one to three nights depending on the dates, and the main hall seats up to 68 guests for dinner. One venue listing says civil weddings take place at a designated venue nearby instead, so ask the hotel to confirm in writing that the ceremony area itself is the registered location.

Planners describe May to the end of September as the most reliable season for these terrace ceremonies. Outside those months, ask each villa where the ceremony moves if it rains, since the legal location has to be one the comune has approved.

Symbolic Only Villas and Villa Olmo's Legal Option

Villa Monastero, Varenna. The villa's booking page describes its ceremonies as symbolic, non civil weddings. The 2025 rate is 3,500 EUR including VAT within opening hours, for the lakeside loggia, the neoclassical temple or the indoor Sala Polvani. That covers exclusive use of the loggia for one hour, plus up to three hours for set up, dismantling and photographs in the garden, which stays open to visitors. Two hours of exclusive use cost 4,200 EUR, and the ceremony page is written for groups of fewer than 30 people. Confirm the current year's rate when you enquire.

Villa Erba, Cernobbio. Italian Lakes Wedding states that Villa Erba is not licensed for civil legally binding ceremonies, so couples either marry legally at another location or hold an informal blessing at the villa. It suits larger receptions, which makes the split between a legal ceremony elsewhere and a celebration here the usual plan.

Villa Olmo, Como. This is the exception among the civic villas. Villa Olmo belongs to the city of Como, and local press reported in 2022 that civil weddings were offered there from April to October in the Sala Ovale or in the small temple in the park, for 500 EUR including VAT. Espansione TV repeated the 500 EUR figure in 2023, and noted that ordinary civil weddings at Palazzo Cernezzi, the town hall, carry no charge. Treat the 500 EUR as a reported figure, not a current quote: the city updates its tariffs each year, so ask the Ufficio di Stato Civile in Como for this season's rate and availability.

How to choose. If having the legal ceremony and every guest in the same place matters most, start with Balbianello, Carlotta, Relais Villa Vittoria or Villa Olmo. If the villa you love is symbolic only, the usual solution is a short civil ceremony at the town hall a day or two before, with your witnesses and close family, then the full ceremony at the villa. Many American couples marry at home before they travel instead, which removes the Italian paperwork entirely. Our guide to town hall civil ceremonies at Lake Como explains how that split works and what it adds to the timeline.

For photography, each route has a cost in hours. A legal ceremony on the wedding day at a second location adds transport and coverage time. A town hall ceremony the day before is better covered as a separate short block of one to two hours, so the signing and the first kiss as a married couple are in your album.

Photos or Symbolic Only: Villa Melzi and Villa d'Este

Villa Melzi, Bellagio. You cannot get married at Villa Melzi. The official site of the Giardini di Villa Melzi states that the garden cannot be rented for private events such as weddings, ceremonies or parties, and that no area can be reserved for vow exchanges. Musicians, officiants, decorations and drones are not allowed. What the gardens do allow is a private photo shoot by prior arrangement with the management, at 427 EUR including VAT for the whole day, with the photographer's entry included and the general ticket of 10 EUR per person bought separately. No area can be reserved, so the shoot happens with visitors in the park. That makes Melzi a good choice for portraits on the morning after or for an engagement session, not for the ceremony itself.

Villa d'Este, Cernobbio. Italian Lakes Wedding states that the hotel is not licensed for civil legally binding ceremonies and that only informal blessings take place in the grounds, on the Terrace Mantero by the water or in the Mosaic Garden. Planners arrange the legal part at the Cernobbio town hall, and one suggests doing it the day before with only the couple and two witnesses. One listing site claims a civil ceremony is possible on site, so settle this with the hotel in writing before you plan the weekend around it.

Whichever villa you choose, ask three questions before you sign: is the ceremony area a registered civil location, who officiates and who books them, and what are the photography rules on the day. The legal step also needs paperwork from home, and our guide to the documents American couples need to marry in Italy lists them in order.

Konstantyn and Mariya photograph a limited number of weddings each year, at legal and symbolic ceremonies alike, and know how each of these villas runs on the day: the boat landings, the visitor hours and the moments when the gardens empty. Weddings start from 7,000 EUR. If you have a villa in mind and want to know how the ceremony and the photographs fit together, check your date with us and tell us which villas are on your list.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Como Wedding Villas

Can you legally get married at a Lake Como villa?

Yes, at villas the comune has designated as a civil ceremony location, such as Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta and, according to planners, Relais Villa Vittoria. At other villas the ceremony is symbolic, and the legal step happens at a town hall or at home.

Can you get married at Villa Melzi?

No. The gardens' official site states that weddings, ceremonies, vow exchanges, officiants and decorations are not permitted. Private photo shoots are possible by prior arrangement with the management.

Is a wedding at Villa del Balbianello legally binding?

It can be. FAI lists both civil and symbolic ceremonies at the villa. A civil ceremony with your documents in order is legally binding, while a symbolic ceremony is not.

What is the difference between a civil and a symbolic ceremony at Lake Como?

A civil ceremony is a legal act led by the civil registrar or a delegate of the comune, in Italian with an interpreter if needed. A symbolic ceremony has no legal value, so you choose the celebrant, the language and the words.

Can we do the legal part at a town hall and celebrate at a villa?

Yes, and it is the most common plan for symbolic only villas. Many couples sign at the town hall a day or two before with close family, then hold the full ceremony at the villa with every guest.

Which Lake Como villas allow symbolic ceremonies only?

Villa Monastero describes its ceremonies as symbolic and non civil. Planners report that Villa d'Este and Villa Erba are not licensed for civil ceremonies and host blessings or symbolic ceremonies only. Always confirm the current status with the venue.
