Villa Lario Resort in Mandello, Not Villa Làrio in Pognana
A Villa Lario Resort Mandello wedding takes place at a small lakefront resort on Via Statale in Mandello del Lario, on the eastern shore of the Lecco branch of Lake Como, with a veranda and a terrace over the water for receptions, a private beach and its own dock. It is not the same property as Villa Làrio in Pognana Lario, a suite hotel on the opposite, Como side of the lake, and couples mix the two up all the time.
Konstantyn and Mariya photographed Natasha and Matthew's wedding at Villa Lario Resort, so this guide is written from the shoreline in Mandello, not from a brochure. Below you will find how the two similarly named venues differ, which spaces the resort offers for a ceremony and dinner, how boat arrivals work from the dock, and what the light does on this side of the lake.
First, the name question. Villa Làrio in Pognana sits on the western shore of the Como branch, between the lakeshore and the cliffs, at Via Giacomo Matteotti 25. The Michelin Guide lists it with 18 rooms, mostly suites spread across separate buildings, an infinity pool and a private jetty. Villa Lario Resort Mandello is a different house in a different province: it stands on the Lecco side, at Via Statale 125, under the limestone walls of the Grigna massif, and has nine suites.
When you send an enquiry, write the town in your first line. Planners and suppliers will thank you, and you will not end up comparing a Pognana quote with a Mandello one. If you are still choosing a shore, our guide to weddings on the Lecco branch of Lake Como explains what this quieter arm of the lake offers compared with the western villas.
Ceremony and Reception Spaces: Terrace, Veranda and Marquee
The resort is built around an early 1900s family villa that was converted into a boutique hotel in 2015, set in a private park of about 10,000 square metres on the shore. A Lake Como planner's venue listing from 2022 names the spaces available for an event: the veranda, with sliding windows that open the room to the lake; the lakefront terrace; an internal hall with Venetian made flooring; a large marquee in the park; and the pool area. The same listing mentions natural caves on the grounds used for aperitifs or a late party; since 2023 two of those caves also hold suites. Spaces change over the years, so ask the resort which of them are offered for weddings today.
For guest numbers, the Italian wedding portal matrimonio.com lists the resort for 70 to 160 guests. That range fits the layout: the terrace and veranda suit a dinner on the smaller side, and the marquee is the answer once your list grows or the forecast turns. We did not find a published capacity for each individual space, so ask the resort for the seated figure of the room you want before you build a guest list around it.
Ceremony. Most couples hold a symbolic ceremony on the terrace or in the park, with the lake and the mountains behind them. A legally valid civil wedding in Italy is a different matter. Under the Civil Code a civil marriage is celebrated at the casa comunale, and a private venue only counts when the comune has formally designated it as a separate civil registry office. We could not find a public record that Mandello has done this for the resort, so ask the resort and the Ufficio di Stato Civile in Mandello directly. Our guide to the civil ceremony at a Lake Como town hall explains how couples split the legal step from the celebration.
Price. The resort does not publish a wedding fee. The matrimonio.com listing shows a starting figure of 218 EUR without saying what it covers. If that is a per guest menu price, as starting figures on that portal often are, 100 guests would put food and drink alone at roughly 21,000 to 25,000 EUR before flowers, music, lighting and a marquee. Treat that as a rough planning range, not a quote, and confirm it with the resort.
Rooms. This is a small house with nine suites: five in the villa, two at the water's edge with private gardens and two built into the natural caves. Only your closest family will sleep on site; the rest of your guests will stay in Mandello, Lecco or Varenna. The hotel also runs Amandus, a fine dining room of about 30 seats, and a more casual Grill and Lounge, which is useful for a rehearsal dinner.
Private Beach and Dock: Arriving by Boat on the Lecco Branch
The resort has private beach areas and its own lakeside dock, plus a helipad in the park. The hotel describes the dock as a landing point for boats arriving at weddings, and it also organises boat tours on the lake. For a wedding, that changes the shape of the day. Instead of a car pulling up on the Via Statale, the couple, or the whole wedding party, can arrive from the water.
A boat arrival works well in two directions. Guests staying in Varenna can come down the eastern shore by water, a private boat from Bellagio can come down the Lecco branch, and the Onno side sits directly across the water. You can also use the dock the other way round: an aperitif cruise for the two of you while guests settle on the terrace, then back to the beach in time for dinner. Our overview of boats and cars for Lake Como wedding guests covers how planners book drivers and lake taxis, and what to budget for.
For photographs, the dock and the beach do two jobs. The dock gives a clean line out into the water for a portrait with the Grigna behind you, and the beach is a calm place for family groups away from the tables. We usually position one of us on the dock for the arrival and one on the terrace to catch your guests watching, which is the main reason we work as a two photographer team at venues like this.
A few practical points. Boat timings depend on wind and season, so your planner should keep a road transfer on standby. Via Statale is the old lakeside road through town, so plan guest bus times with your planner rather than at weekday commuting hours. And if your heart is set on a second location for portraits, Varenna portraits a short drive north pair well with a Mandello reception; the direct train between the two takes roughly 12 to 15 minutes.
Mountain Backdrop and Evening Light in Natasha and Matthew's Photos
Mandello sits on the eastern shore of the Lecco branch and looks west across the water toward the Onno side. That orientation is the key to planning the photographs. Through the afternoon the sun moves across the lake toward the mountains on the opposite shore, so the terrace, the beach and the dock face into it. The sun drops behind that western ridge before the official sunset time, and the warm light goes with it. In June that can still leave you a long golden stretch; in September and October the window shortens noticeably and arrives earlier in the evening.
Behind the resort, the Grigna works the other way. Its pale limestone walls catch the last direct light after the shore has gone into shade, so portraits taken facing the house and the mountains still have colour in the sky and on the rock. On the terrace we photograph you with the lake behind for the backlit, glowing frames, then turn you round to face the Grigna for the clean, evenly lit portraits families tend to print.
That is the light you see in Natasha and Matthew's photos from Mandello: open water in one direction, steep mountains in the other, and a small enough venue that we can move between the terrace, the dock and the beach in a few minutes. Our Tremezzo wedding guide to Lake Como venues shows how different that side of the lake feels if you are comparing.
For a timeline, we suggest a ceremony in the second half of the afternoon, an aperitif on the beach and terrace, and a short portrait session on the dock as the sun reaches the western ridge, then dinner on the veranda or under the marquee. We photograph a limited number of weddings each year, with weddings from 7,000 EUR and engagement or proposal sessions from 1,800 EUR. If Villa Lario Resort is on your list, check your date with us and we will send you a light plan for your month.
Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Lario Resort Weddings
Is Villa Lario Resort the same venue as Villa Làrio in Pognana?
No. Villa Lario Resort is at Via Statale 125 in Mandello del Lario, on the eastern shore of the Lecco branch. Villa Làrio is a separate suite hotel at Via Giacomo Matteotti 25 in Pognana Lario, on the Como branch. They are separate hotels in different provinces, Lecco and Como, so always name the town when you enquire.
How many guests can Villa Lario Resort host for a wedding?
The matrimonio.com listing gives 70 to 160 guests. The terrace and veranda suit the smaller end of that range, and the marquee in the park is used for larger dinners. Ask the resort for the seated capacity of each space for your layout.
Can we have a legal ceremony at Villa Lario Resort?
A symbolic ceremony on site is the usual choice. A civil wedding is only legally valid at a venue the comune has designated as a separate civil registry office, and we found no public record of that for the resort. Confirm with the resort and the Mandello town hall, or complete the legal step at the town hall and celebrate at the resort.
How do guests get to Mandello del Lario from Milan?
Direct regional trains from Milano Centrale reach Mandello in about 51 minutes on the fastest services, roughly hourly. By car the trip is about 65 km and around an hour without traffic. Lecco is about 10 minutes away by train and Varenna roughly 12 to 15.
Can our guests stay at the resort for the wedding weekend?
Only a small group. The resort has nine suites, so it works for the couple and close family. Most guests will need rooms in Mandello, Lecco or Varenna, with shuttles or boats on the day.
