Why Couples Choose the Castle Above Susegana
A Castello San Salvatore wedding takes place inside a medieval fortress on a hill above Susegana, in the province of Treviso, with the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco hills rolling away below the walls. The castle hosts exclusive use weddings with ceremonies on its lawns and in its historic rooms, dinner on the terraces, and Venice Marco Polo airport about 55 km away.
The castle has belonged to the Collalto family since the city of Treviso granted them the San Salvatore hill in 1245, and it was built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. It covers around 3,000 square metres, which makes it one of the larger castles in northern Italy. Inside the walls you find a tall stone tower, the ruined medieval structures around it, a frescoed chapel and Palazzo Odoardo, the later palace with its statue lined double staircase.
Konstantyn Zakhariy and Mariya Gritsak, a two photographer team based at Lake Como, have photographed a wedding at Castello San Salvatore, and this guide draws on that day. It covers why couples choose the castle, how the civil, symbolic and religious options fit together, how to build a weekend that includes Venice, and how the stone, terraces and vineyard light photograph.
If Venice itself is part of your plans, our Venice wedding photographer guide covers the city. This post stays on the castle and the hills around it.
Ceremony Formats at the Castle and Where the Legal Rite Happens
A castle with a full history. San Salvatore is not a restored folly. After the Battle of Caporetto in 1917, Austro-German forces occupied Susegana and used the castle, and Italian artillery later bombarded it, causing severe damage. It was repaired between 1943 and 1951, and today the mix of rebuilt walls and preserved ruins is part of its character. In photographs the broken arches beside the tower give a scale and texture that a manicured villa garden cannot.
What the venue offers. The castle's wedding page describes civil and symbolic ceremonies, held outdoors or in historic indoor spaces, with terraces and gardens overlooking the Prosecco hills and a bridal preparation room inside the castle. An in house wedding planning service is available on request, and the venue also works with your own planner. Guest capacity depends on the season and the spaces you choose; the venue does not publish a single figure, and one venue directory lists it as more than 200 guests, so ask for the numbers for each space in writing.
Where the legal rite happens. In Italy a legally binding civil wedding is performed by the town hall, here the Comune di Susegana, either at the town hall or at a location the comune has approved. Before you plan the ceremony as your legal marriage, ask the venue to confirm in writing whether the comune currently celebrates civil weddings at the castle, in which spaces, and with what fee. Americans also need their documents prepared months ahead; our guide to what Americans need to marry legally in Italy walks through the steps.
The symbolic route. Many couples sign legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the castle. That frees the words, the officiant, the language and the time of day, and it suits the lawn below the tower, where a ceremony can sit at any hour you like. It is also the natural format for ceremonies with their own traditions, such as a chuppah. A directory listing also mentions church ceremonies; if a religious rite matters to you, confirm with the venue which church or chapel is used and what the parish requires.
Terraces, Vineyards and Pairing It With Venice
The terraces and the view. The castle sits on its own hill, so the terraces look straight out over vineyards, villages and the plain, with the mountains to the north. Dinner on a balustraded terrace lined with statues, with chandeliers hung outdoors, is the set piece of many San Salvatore weddings. Courtyards and lawns inside the walls take welcome drinks and dancing, and the venue directory notes a covered structure or marquee for wet weather.
The Prosecco hills around you. The Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco hills were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2019 as a cultural landscape of steep slopes and terraced vineyards. The castle's own weekend program suggests picnics and tastings among the vines, e bike or Vespa tours, horseback rides and hot air balloon flights, and the Collalto family runs its own winery, so a welcome event in the vineyards needs no long transfer.
Getting there. According to the castle, Venice Marco Polo airport is about 55 km away, roughly 50 minutes by car, Treviso airport about 25 km, Treviso city 20 km and Venice city about 60 km. The nearest train station, Susegana, is about 3 km away, with Conegliano about 6 km. Guests flying from the US usually connect into Marco Polo, so a private coach from the airport or from a Venice hotel is the simplest plan.
Pairing it with Venice. A three day weekend works well: welcome dinner in Venice, wedding at the castle, and a vineyard brunch on the last morning. The castle also offers private boat days and tours in Venice as part of its experiences. The catch is accommodation: the venue directory lists on site rooms for fewer than 20 guests, so most of your group will sleep in Conegliano, Treviso or Venice, and the hotel choice decides how long the coach ride is each evening.
Season and budget. Late May to early October is the usual window. June gives the longest evenings, with sunset close to 9 pm, while September brings the grape harvest, which in these hills typically runs through the middle and second half of the month. As a reference, one venue directory places exclusive venue hire in the 10,000 to 15,000 EUR band, before catering, flowers and production; treat that as an indication only and ask the castle for a current quote. If you are still comparing regions, see Lake Garda weddings in northern Italy or vineyard weddings in Tuscany.
Stone Walls, Vineyard Golden Hour and Stephanie and Ben's Day
We photographed Stephanie and Ben's wedding at Castello San Salvatore, and the gallery shows how the castle shapes a day. It opens with getting ready in a room with a canopy bed, then quiet portraits on the frescoed staircase of Palazzo Odoardo. The ceremony took place on the lawn under a floral chuppah, with white chairs set between the tower and the ruins, and dinner was laid on the statue lined terrace above the vineyards. The night moved to a lit dance floor, the tower glowing red against a deep blue sky, and a hora with the couple lifted on chairs.
Stone walls. The pale stone and white marble statues reflect light beautifully, but at midday they turn harsh and bright. Plan family photos in the shade of the palace facade or on the staircase, where the light is soft and even, and keep the brightest hours for details and candids. The frescoed interiors photograph with a warm, almost pink tone, so the dress and suits read cleanly against them.
Vineyard golden hour. Because the castle stands above the hills, the last hour before sunset lights the terraces from the side and turns the vineyards gold below. Plan twenty to thirty minutes of portraits then, on the balustrade among the statues and along the walls, and seat dinner slightly later so you do not have to choose. A drone pass over the castle and vineyards, if the venue and regulations allow it, shows the scale of the hill in one frame.
The night. The lit tower and ruins are the most recognisable night frames here. Ask your lighting team to light them during dinner, and we will step out with you for five minutes between courses.
Konstantyn and Mariya photograph weddings across Italy on film and digital, always as a team of two. We photograph a limited number of weddings each year, with weddings from 7,000 EUR. If Castello San Salvatore is on your list, check your date with us and tell us your guest count and ceremony format, so we can help you plan the timeline around the light before you sign.
Frequently Asked Questions About a Castello San Salvatore Wedding
Can you have a legal civil wedding at Castello San Salvatore?
The castle offers civil and symbolic ceremonies. A legally binding civil wedding in Italy is performed by the comune, here Susegana, so confirm with the venue whether the town hall currently celebrates civil weddings at the castle and in which spaces, or plan a symbolic ceremony there and the legal signing at home or at the town hall.
How far is Castello San Salvatore from Venice?
The castle gives about 55 km to Venice Marco Polo airport, roughly 50 minutes by car, about 60 km to Venice city and about 25 km to Treviso airport. Traffic varies, so allow extra time for guest coaches.
How many guests can Castello San Salvatore host?
The venue says capacity depends on the season and the spaces used, and a venue directory lists more than 200 guests. Ask the castle for the exact figures for the ceremony, dinner and wet weather option.
When is the best season for a wedding in the Prosecco hills?
Late May to early October. June offers the longest evenings, and September adds the grape harvest atmosphere, which in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills usually falls in the middle and second half of the month.
Can we combine a Venice welcome dinner with a castle wedding?
Yes. Many couples host the welcome dinner in Venice and move everyone to the castle by coach for the wedding day. Base guests in Treviso or Conegliano if most of the weekend happens in the hills, or in Venice if the city is the bigger draw.
Can guests stay at the castle?
Only a few. A venue directory lists on site accommodation for fewer than 20 guests, so book hotels nearby for the rest of your group and plan transport back each night.
